Courtyard By Marriott Riverview on Lockwood

We are coming from Portland, Or to visit Charleston (first time) in Oct, and are thinking of staying at the Courtyard By Marriott Riverview. We will have a car but were wondering if we can safely walk the 1 mile to the Historic District from the hotel. We are avid walkers and a mile walk is nothing for us.

Also, are there restaurants close to this hotel?

Thanks for your help.

I do not think that I would recommend you walking from the Courtyard to the Historic District. I think that it is doable as far as distance it would be about 1.5 miles. However I don%26#39;t think that certain areas are the most desirable neighborhoods.

The only restaurant that comes to mind that would be within walking distance (real close to the Courtyard) is the one at the city marina. That is called the Variety Store. They have good food and the atmosphere is casual. They also have a low-key bar on the 1st floor called Salty Mikes, which would be a great place to go sit on the water and have a drink.

Hi Judy.

I kind of disagree with O%26#39;Meila here. If you are avid walkers, then you can walk; it%26#39;s pretty far as O%26#39;Meila said, but if you%26#39;re up to a long walk in the heat, well..... As for the neighborhoods, I agree that if you took the straight, as the bird flies, route, you%26#39;d not be too comfortable. But if you take a right out of the hotel and continue along Lockwood all the way around, it will put you right in the city center. Again, it%26#39;s probably 2 or more miles, but it%26#39;s right along the river for the most part and would be quite pleasant.

As for dinner within walking distance, I think you could walk across the Ashley River Bridge and then to California Dreaming, a very nice establishment. It%26#39;s a bit farther than Salty Mike%26#39;s, but probably better.

Of course, if you are too tired (or the weather%26#39;s bad), you can always hail a cab and it won%26#39;t be very much to get back to the hotel.

Enjoy your stay!

I do not believe the route is unsafe at all.

Thanks to both of you for your input .... it is difficult when you have never been to a city and you don%26#39;t know your way around .... the free parking at this hotel was a plus, but we really like to be close to shops, restaurants, etc., so maybe we should consider another hotel. This one looked quite nice, especially since it is on the river.

Thanks again. This forum is terrific for those of us who have no clue about a city. : ) Thanks again for taking the time to respond.
