enroute to Myrtle Beach

Would be very grateful if you could assist me. We are a family of 4 (me, husband, kids ages 14 %26amp; 9) from Bath, UK and are looking forward to a 2 week US break. We have a confirmed one week stay at the Marriott Ocean Watch mid April 2007. It appears that flights to Myrtle Beach from London seem prohibitive, which means we will have to drive from Wash DC (where fares from London are much cheaper). Now here%26#39;s the dilemna. We can either go straight to Myrtle from DC and stay at the Sheraton Broadway plantation for the first week, and then Marriott Ocean Watch for the second week. Or, stay at the Marriott Manor Club in Williamsburg for the first week, then Marriott Myrtle for the second week. Basically. what I would like to know is whether we should stay at the Myrtle Beach area for 2 weeks or one. Hope my query is not too confusing. Can anyone help??

I guess by opting for 1 week in Williamsburg you would get to see a bit more of the US...I have never been to Williamsburg, but heard that is really beautiful and there is a number of attractions there...plus all of the history.

If you do opt to spend the whole 2 weeks here at the beach, you would find plenty to do to occupy your time. It would also give you the opportunity to explore the area around here, i.e, Georgetown, Charleston, Wilmington...just to name a few areas. And with the ages your kids are, I%26#39;m sure a week near Broadway at the Beach (www.broadwayatthebeach.com) and then a week on the beachfront would be fine with them.

Have you tried to find a connecting flight from Dulles Airport (IAD) that goes to Myrtle Beach? This may not be too expensive being that you will have to rent a car from DC and drive almost 8 hours to Myrtle Beach. Since you will be here for 2 weeks, it may not be too bad if you have to drive from DC. You could go to Downtown DC and stay there for a day or so. There are many attractions there to see. So if you do drive to Myrtle Beach from DC you have so much to see on the way.

Williamsburg is not quite on the way to Myrtle Beach. Williamsburg is closer to Virgina Beach/Norfolk/Hampton Roads area. Personally there is nothing in Virginia Beach for me. That area is a little boring to me. Williamsburg has the Colonia area where you can learn a lot of American history. You can see some civil war artifacts and go to Busch Gardens. Other than that, that%26#39;s all that%26#39;s in Williamsburg. You might be better off staying in DC for a few days, then driving to Myrlte Beach and then coming back to DC to go home. Seems confusing but it will be worth the trip. You can take a tour of the White House, the Senate and Capitol Buidlings, Supreme Court, Mt.Vernon where George washington home is (Beautiful place) go see Georgetown area (Georgetown University where I work), so much to do that it won%26#39;t be a waist of time to spend 2-4 days here.

Myrtle Beach airport is such a small airport, so there are no international flights that come directly there. Maybe you can go to Atlanta it won%26#39;t be as far of a drive, maybe 3 hours or so, and Atlanta is a nice place to visit. It has a major airport there. 2 weeks in Myrtle Beach is too much time for my personal lifestyle. I would prefer only 1 week at the most. I mainly stay 3-4 nights. But since you are from overseas, you could go to so many other places near Myrlte beach like, Charleston SC, Wilmington, NC.

If you wanted an oceanfront room, meaning the hotel sits directly on the beach, I don%26#39;t think the hotels you have chosen are on the beach. Please correct me if I am wrong anyone.

I know I wrote a lot but you have so many options.

The Mariott Ocean Watch is on the beach...just north of the Mariott at Grande Dunes..now the Sheraton at Broadway is (of course) at Broadway..

Did you check on flying from London to Atlanta or even Chicago? From those locations you could catch Airtran into the beach....now I could spend a great week in Chicago!

When we used to vacation at the beach we never spent less than 10 days here...and sometimes would spend almost 3 weeks. But we did drive to Charleston and Wilmington during our visits too. I can easily be a beach bum for at least a week, with doing next to nothing but sitting on the beach.

Thanks for both your fantastic replies. Have decided for better or worse to stick to 2 weeks at Myrtle. It will be a new experience for us. We love America and have been every year for the past 9 years or so. Will keep on checking on flights to Myrtle, and your suggestion to fly to Atlanta instead is magic! It%26#39;s not as cheap as Dulles, but as you observed, nearer to Myrtle. Have checked out Amtrak %26amp; Greyhound from Wash DC, and they do not seem to help either (moneywise!). Re Marriott Oceanwatch, I believe this is oceanfront, well, I hope it is. Thanks for all the advise.

BathUK....

You might also check into Charlotte (thats US Air%26#39;s hub) or even Raleigh.....as for flight from Atlanta, Airtran does run some great specials...like currently from Atlanta to Myrtle is $39 each way (I think that fare ended today, matter of fact). And the Mariott Ocean Watch is a direct ocean front property. And they sit on a great beach!

Have fun!

Hello again. Great info on Air Tran. However, not sure if we can book tickets with non-US address credit card. Will check this out. Isn%26#39;t this forum just great!!

The forum is awesome....I use it whenever and wherever I travel. Have been able to find some fantastic deals, and places to visit (and eat!) that I would have never found otherwise!

BathUK - since you are planning to stay two weeks at Myrtle Beach - you might want to rent a condo - I am sure the Marriott is nice - but a condo will give you more room and a full kitchen. At the time of year you are planning to visit (mid-April) you could get a two or three bedroom oceanfront condo for much less money!

Let me know if you are interested and I can do some research for you and give you some suggestions.

Susan

Thank you Susan, but I believe both properties, Sheraton %26amp; Marriott, are condos with full kitchens. Mums do not really go on holiday even when the kids are on holiday! We still have to do the cooking, laundry, etc. Oh well, but I am determined to enjoy South Carolina. Thanks for your concern,
