Planning faaaarrr in advance

We are very interested in visiting Charleston next May (2007). My girlfriend and I love to travel around the Memorial Day holiday (this year was Paris).

My question is twofold: Are there any special things going on at Patriot%26#39;s Point, Ft. Sumter or the Citadel on Memorial Day itself? Also, how crowded does the city get during this time?

Thanks for your help.

Memorial Day is during Spoleto so there is plenty to do and many of the hotels are booked so book early.

I am not aware of anything special going on at Patriot%26#39;s Point or Ft. Sumter.

The Citadel cadets are gone for the summer so the campus takes on a very different atmosphere with Maymester and graduate students. The Annual Stadium Sale, which is a BIG garage sale, is usually held that week-end. The proceeds go to scholarships. Many of the things sold are discards from the cadets and other things are donated items from the community. The museum on campus is open but the hours may be limited.

Thanks SCBlossom,

Since you mentioned Maymester at the Citadel, does that mean no Parade of Cadets on Fridays? I was looking forward to seeing that.

Also, what%26#39;s Spoleto?

Spoleto is an arts festival held here in late May and early June each year. There are various events all over town.

The Citadel%26#39;s last parade is on Friday before their graduation which is early May. There is a free museum on the campus which also has a special film about Mark Clark. Many visitors enjoy going into the chapel and the gift shop which is located in the Mark Clark Hall. The times for the museum and the parade change so it is best to check out the website: www.citadel.edu

Thanks again for the feedback. This will definitely influence my planning.
