Family Birthday Dinner 50th, with kids, teens and 4 adults

We will be staying on Kiawah Island in July. We are celebrating my husband%26#39;s 50th birthday and were looking for a good place to eat. I%26#39;m certain that that the menu at the Ocean Room is out, possibley the Jasmine Porch may work ? Our party is 4 adults, 3 teenagers , a pre-teen and a six year old. I considered going to Charleston or to another of the Islands. My husband was looking forward to good old barbeque, sweet tea or seafood or steak. HELP !!!!!

We have never been to SC before.

The Jasmine Porch may be a good solution for you. The setting is lovely. Otherwise ...

The Rosebank Farm Cafe at The Bohicket Marina, just outside Kiawah, toward Seabrook, does local dishes from fresh ingredients. People love the fried chicken. I like the fried shrimp and fried oysters. You could probably please everyone there. After dinner you can walk around the marina.

For barbecue, drive in toward Charleston up the Savannah Highway (Rte. 17) to Bessingers. The place is not glamorous, but the barbecued pork and ribs are local favorites, and there are lots of good side dishes. In one section of the restaurant, they do an ';all you can eat'; buffet. They also make excellent hamburgers.

Also, check the menu at Hege%26#39;s Restaurant, at the new Freshfields Center, just outside the entrance to Kiawah. They have a varied Continental/Italian menu, including pastas that might appeal to the kids.

Also, on Saturday evenings the Resort does river-side oyster roasts at Mingo Point on Kiawah. In addtion the wonderful oysters, there is an extensive buffet with excellent barbecued pork, as well as chicken and ribs. You eat a picnic tables with checkered cloths. There will be a live band that children love to dance to. The oyster roasts have been big favorites with our family -- all ages.

As a general rule - oyster roasts are not offered in the warmer months. I don%26#39;t know about that specific location. The ';rule'; has always been that raw/steamed/roasted oysters are safe to eat in months containing an R ie- JanuaRy, FebRuary, MaRch, etc.

The oyster roast option may not be available during your visit.

Actually, The Kiawah Island Golf Resort has been doing regular weekly oyster roasts ONLY in the high season (i.e. summer) for over 25 years. Obviously, the oysters are not from local waters in these months; but they are delicious nonetheless.

Endofsunshine is correct that summer is not the traditional time for these events. For authentic roasts, come down around January.

(Do check with the Resort about scheduling. I think they have moved the oyster roasts to monday nights.)
