We%26#39;re doing the long drive Saturday (6/25) w/ 2 kids, 8 and 5. We will need several stops along the way during this trek. Any suggestions, other than South of the Border (yuk!) TIA!!

In terms of breaking up your trip in relatively equal incriments, if you want to stop twice from Richmond and still be somewhere with restaurants, etc., I might consider stopping around Rocky Mount, NC (125 miles) and in Florence, SC (175 more miles). From Florence, it%26#39;s about 180 miles to HHI. Stopping in Benson, NC (at the conjunct of I-95 and I-40) is closer to the other 2 distances, but there isn%26#39;t much there.

If you just want to stop once, Fayetteville, NC would be close to halfway.

I%26#39;m with the Rocky Mount, but consider Smithfield exit 97. Great shopping at JR. Also at Florence stop at the Darlington Exit. Lots of Restaurants of the Road Type (Dennys, Perkin Pancakes et al.)

Good advice, Stan. That%26#39;s the US-52 exit (Darlington). There is a Ruby Tuesday%26#39;s and Fatz right off that exit and a few decent low-budget hotels there if you need them also. I worked 8 miles from this exit all the past year : )

Thanks. I expect the first ';how much longers'; and ';are we there yets'; around Petersburg, so I%26#39;ll need a break as much as they will.

A bit further south, you can stop at Santee, SC. The South Carolina Welcome Center there is large and very nice. You can pick up maps, books, and coupons.

Santee has all the usual chain restaurants; but we like ';The Veranda'; restaurant, which is assoicated with the Best Western Santee, just off I-95 to the east. It has a very pleasant, attractive atmosphere and really good meals for adults and children.

Santee is a resort area on the shores of Lake Marion, so you may find some other ways to ';stretch your legs'; while you are there.
