myrtle beach hotel/condo

Hi all! We are a family of 4 (2 teens) and we will be in Myrtle Beach for 3 days in July. Any recommendations for a hotel (preferably beachfront or close enough to walk) that is less expensive than Breakers or Kingston?

myrtle beach hotel/condo

You might check out a few of these....

Carolina Grande (across street from beach)

Dayton House

both of these are in the same area as the Breakers...within walking distance to restaurants, downtown, and tho walkable (3 miles) a short drive to get to Broadway (or you could take the bus)

You might check out www.vrbo (condo rental site) some really good deals to be had here....some place there to look for would be Forest Dunes or South Wind Villas....just thought of a few more hotels, more to the north end, but walking distance to alot of places to eat and shop....Monteray Suites (they include a really great breakfast buffet and a dessert reception in the evening in the rate!) or Grande Shores.....

Good luck!

Family Birthday Dinner 50th, with kids, teens and 4 adults

We will be staying on Kiawah Island in July. We are celebrating my husband%26#39;s 50th birthday and were looking for a good place to eat. I%26#39;m certain that that the menu at the Ocean Room is out, possibley the Jasmine Porch may work ? Our party is 4 adults, 3 teenagers , a pre-teen and a six year old. I considered going to Charleston or to another of the Islands. My husband was looking forward to good old barbeque, sweet tea or seafood or steak. HELP !!!!!

We have never been to SC before.

Sandy

The Jasmine Porch may be a good solution for you. The setting is lovely. Otherwise ...

The Rosebank Farm Cafe at The Bohicket Marina, just outside Kiawah, toward Seabrook, does local dishes from fresh ingredients. People love the fried chicken. I like the fried shrimp and fried oysters. You could probably please everyone there. After dinner you can walk around the marina.

For barbecue, drive in toward Charleston up the Savannah Highway (Rte. 17) to Bessingers. The place is not glamorous, but the barbecued pork and ribs are local favorites, and there are lots of good side dishes. In one section of the restaurant, they do an ';all you can eat'; buffet. They also make excellent hamburgers.

Also, check the menu at Hege%26#39;s Restaurant, at the new Freshfields Center, just outside the entrance to Kiawah. They have a varied Continental/Italian menu, including pastas that might appeal to the kids.

Also, on Saturday evenings the Resort does river-side oyster roasts at Mingo Point on Kiawah. In addtion the wonderful oysters, there is an extensive buffet with excellent barbecued pork, as well as chicken and ribs. You eat a picnic tables with checkered cloths. There will be a live band that children love to dance to. The oyster roasts have been big favorites with our family -- all ages.

Family Birthday Dinner 50th, with kids, teens and 4 adults

As a general rule - oyster roasts are not offered in the warmer months. I don%26#39;t know about that specific location. The ';rule'; has always been that raw/steamed/roasted oysters are safe to eat in months containing an R ie- JanuaRy, FebRuary, MaRch, etc.

The oyster roast option may not be available during your visit.

Actually, The Kiawah Island Golf Resort has been doing regular weekly oyster roasts ONLY in the high season (i.e. summer) for over 25 years. Obviously, the oysters are not from local waters in these months; but they are delicious nonetheless.

Endofsunshine is correct that summer is not the traditional time for these events. For authentic roasts, come down around January.

(Do check with the Resort about scheduling. I think they have moved the oyster roasts to monday nights.)

  • Mingo Point Oyster Roast

I haven%26#39;t been to Kiawah in 6 years. I understand there have been some changes since then. We really enjoyed the Monday night oyster roast at Mingo Point. Do they still have that?

    Mingo Point Oyster Roast

I haven%26#39;t been to one this year, but last summer they were doing the oyster roasts. The oysters were as good as ever. The buffet was actually much better than it used to be.

    Mingo Point Oyster Roast

I have just confirmed that Kiawah Island Golf Resort is doing the oyster roasts every Monday night, Memorial Day through Labor Day. They don%26#39;t seem to be advertising the roasts on the website, but they definitely are doing the event. Just call the Resort for a reservation.

  • questions...

hi everyone! can someone pleeeease help me remeber what the italian place next to the atlantic paradise inn is called?? i cannot remember. Also can anyone give me the names of bars around there? I remember we went to a few small bars in walking distance to our hotel, but i cant think of any names. i know one was a country music type bar with a mechanical bull. thanks!!!

    questions...

I cant think of an Italian restaurant right next door to that property...if there is one, it may be one of the hotels restaurants...there is not a ';stand alone'; restaurant at the south end (not affiliated with a hotel) except for Damons just south of 29th Ave S....a great Italian place not far from there would be Villa Romana...there are at 7th Ave S and Kings...so, less than a mile from the Atlantic Paradise...the country bar you are probably talking about is Beach Wagon...ALOT of fun, and very busy, and yes they have the Bull...they are just at 9th Ave S and Kings...so again, just a short walk...

    Have a great time!

    rental house on Pawleys Island

    Hi

I am looking for a rental property on Pawleys Island. My friends and I Have been through a lot of ';stuff'; lately. We need a place to relax and enjoy the ocean and get to know Captain Morgan all over again and again. I have never stayed on Pawleys Island but I have visted the island a few times. I will sincerely appreciate all responses! S Chizum

    rental house on Pawleys Island

    Try ';Ducks Nest - Down'; house on the beach -- available thru Pawleys Island Realty. We%26#39;ve stayed there 3 times -- winter twice, fall once. Right on the beach, good porch, and it%26#39;s next door to the Sea View Inn where you can get some excellent Low Country meals if you ';play your cards right';

    rental house on Pawleys Island

Rental properties abound--depending on the time of year you are planning to come. I am fortunate to live at Pawleys Island. On the beach last night, my guess is that almost everything is booked this week. There are 2 and 3 bedroom condos at Litchfield by the Sea ( a gated community) and many houses-some that sleep 18-20- in the Litchfield/Pawleys Area. My advice is to check the websites of the rental companies--Jimmy Smith; Pawleys Island Realty; Dunes Realty; Litchfield Real Estate; Lachicotte Real Estate all handle the rental market here and are all reputable.

We have stayed with The Dieter Company for years. They have a great staff that is familiar with all of the properties and knows the area well. They helped us pick the perfect house on Paweleys - The Beach House #136, which we have been staying in for years now. They also are helpful every year with the best new restraunts. Check out their website it shows all of the properties and when they are available www.dietercompany.com

we stay at the anchor inn on the north end of the island..

    4:00 traffic on the strip?

We will be coming into MB probably around 4 or 5 in the afternoon on a Thursday, July 6. We are staying on the south end of strip, and will probably be coming in on 501. Anyone have any suggestions as to the best route and/or alternate to take to avoid traffic? Will traffic even be an issue at that time of day / week?

    4:00 traffic on the strip?

Traffic will be ridiculous. We always make the turn off on 3rd Street South (first stoplight past the Grissom Expwy). Depending on how far down the strip you are, you may want to hit the bypass and then head toward the beach when you get near the airport.

    4:00 traffic on the strip?

WV - we are right between 11th and 10th ave. on S. Ocean Blvd. - when you say bypass, do you mean rt. 17?

Take 501 to 544 and 544 will run you into Garden city then take a left at 17 then go about a mile or 2 then the strip is on you right.

The best thing to do instead of turning on the strip is to go on down 17 until you get to the avn closet to your hotel.

.What is the address of the hotel you are staying at?

cbr - staying at Polynesian Beach and Golf Resort, 1001 S. Ocean Blvd. - do you know anything about this hotel? Heard bad things so far. Is 17 the same as Kings Hwy.? I was thinking of doing what you suggested. We used to come in that way when we stayed in Surfside a few years ago, and it did seem alot less congested.

-Yes 17 is the same as King Hwy.

-No I anit never stayed there but I had family that has and they said never again.

-I believe that 544 will be your best bet

cbr - Thanks! Wish me luck!

I have to disagree with the advice to take 544. We travel to Surfside several times a year and must travel 544. It can back up as bad as 501 and it is more than 1 -2 miles up to MB. More like 7-8 miles. I think it would be way out of the way to go this way.

I just looked up hthe address of this hotel and it is some what in the middle of both ways. This is just a hit and mis deal.

I did not say 544 was 1 or 2 miles by the way I said after you take a left on Kings Hwy then it is about 1-2 mile to ocean Blvd. Sorry for the confusion.

Traffic will definately be pretty heavy at that time especially on Ocean Blvd. I would suggest following 501 straight into MB and make a right onto Business 17 (you will see the Pavilion across the street), Take Bus. 17 about a mile and a half and make a left at the light at 3rd Ave S. At the stop sign make a right onto Ocean Blvd and the Polynesian will be 7 blocks on your left. Hane a great vacation!

anybobmb - Isn%26#39;t 501 bumper to bumper all the way to 17?

lovestogo - My family used to stay near Surfside also! We%26#39;d go every summer, and we also had to take 544. It wasn%26#39;t too bad then, but that was also 8 years ago! Is it really that bad now?

cbr - Isn%26#39;t it basically like a 5 minute drive on 17 from 544 to the strip?

Directions to N. Myrtle from Cleveland, Ohio

We%26#39;re leaving for N. Myrtle Beach on 6/24 and need quick and easy directions. We%26#39;ve been there many times but we always take the same route and it usuallly takes us 14 hrs. Someone told me they made the trip in 12. Does anyone have a good route to follow? Thanks.

Directions to N. Myrtle from Cleveland, Ohio

We find we like taking interstates. More miles but we make it from Wadsworth to N Myrtle taking the following route in 12 hrs 15 minutes. I-77 South to Columbia SC to I-20 East. Takes approximately 10 hours with stops for lunch and gas fillup. I-20 East to exit 141-A to I-95 North to exit 170 (327). 327 for approximatley 5 miles to 576/501 (left on 576/501). Continue on 501 to Highway 22. Highway 22 direct into NMB and 17.

Can get confusing once you turn off 327 as the road numbers keep changing but stay on the highway because it will beome 501. 501 will take you to 22.

We love this route since it does not take us through as many small towns and is basically all highway. Last year friends of ours went the route through the small towns and lost time due to one of them getting a speeding ticket with what they said was the real Barney Fife.

Directions to N. Myrtle from Cleveland, Ohio

Think this one has been on here before. I remember the Wadsworth reply. I have family up that way.

Anyway we also use the interstate route. Only difference is we jump off at Ridgeway and run Rt 34 over to Lugoff to pick up I 20. Shaves approx. 20 miles off. Might save 5-10 minutes. If interested I can give more detailed information to get through there. Isn%26#39;t that bad. Just follow signs.

At Florence you%26#39;ll start seeing ';Beach Traffic'; signs directing you around Florence and up I 95 north. From I 95 in........Jump off I 95 at exit 170. Top of ramp turn right onto Rt 327.

Unless they%26#39;ve added some, the second stoplight(5-6 miles) is Rt 76. Turn left on Rt 76.

Rt 76 to Marion. Just before Marion stay in right lane. Again just follow the signs. Lane veers to right and in a matter of seconds you%26#39;ll be on Rt 501.

Rt 501 to Aynor and Conway. If there%26#39;s any question about rest stop, the Hardee%26#39;s in Aynor will be last stop before NMB.(30+ miles)

Just past Aynor you will pick up Rt 22. Rt 22 hits Rt 17 at Kings Road. For Windy Hill or Cresent Beach take Rt 17 north into NMB.

For Cherry Grove or Ocean Drive sections you%26#39;ll see Rt 31 before you get to Rt 17. Take Rt 31 north to Little River and pick up Rt 9. Bear right. Cross the Inner-Coastal Waterway and you%26#39;re at Sea Mountian Highway, Cherry Grove.

    Where do your relatives live?

    Medina, Spencer, Wellington

What a small world. We go to Spencer for their 4th of July fireworks. Have friends on the fire department there. When are you heading to NMB for your vacation?

July 15-22. Leave out Friday night around midnite. Breakfast at Tar Baby%26#39;s.....

  • Do the gambling boats go out in the ocean?

Do the gambling boats go out in the ocean and if so how far? I think there is more then one isn%26#39;t there and if so can anyone recommend one over the other?

Do the gambling boats go out in the ocean?

    Hay Kahuna,

Yes, the gambling boats do go out and by SC law, they have to go out 3 or more miles off shore line. I personally havent gone but, People I%26#39;ve talked to says its nice. If you%26#39;re staying in the nearby communities, you might find some coupons for the Gamling excursions. Good Luck

Do the gambling boats go out in the ocean?

The gambling boats go out of Little River...you will be on the boat about 45 min-an hour before the machines come on as they have to reach the NC border being gambling is illegal in SC. They are a lot of fun and I strongly recommend the Sun Cruz casino boat. Enjoy!

Thanks thats what I was hoping. I%26#39;ve never been way out on the ocean and about 2 hours of gambling does me.

    anybob....

maybe not illegal in SC for much longer...after all, you can now buy SC lottery tickets (just recently begun). That%26#39;s gambling.

A bunch of places near me have recently got busted fr poker machines.

That is definately true daddio. I, as well, do not think it will be much longer before they legalize gambling in all ways in SC. They are just doing it little by little for now and the start was the lottery.

    saw this today myrtlebeachonline.com/mld/鈥?4268493.htm

I think the way the law states around here on the gaming boats is that they have to head out to international waters (which is approx 4 to 5 miles offshore)...nothing to do with the NC or SC state line. Once they hit that mark the machines come on, and when they hoist the anchor to come back in, they turn off the machines.......

As for the article, the boats have always stirred up a bit of converstation....you have the pros who look at the amount of visitor traffic now coming to the area and the jobs this industry has in place in Little River, and the cons who remember what the waterfront was and looked like before the boats docking there....it was really a beautiful place then, and still is when the boats are out.

I guess I see both sides being in the service industry....the boats are alot of fun! Even if you dont gamble, its a great way to see the waterway and our area from a different prespecitve...but it is sad to see some of those large oak trees that are now surrounded by concrete and gravel and may not see the next 1000 years.....enjoy the area there....and one of my all time favorite restaurant (and restaurant owners...Tim and Tony!) CRABCATCHERS....just save a chair for me!

    :)

Just a warning if you are prone to seasickness, beware! You may spend the whole cruise looking at the bottom of a trash can. If you have heard of people getting sick deepsea fishing, it%26#39;s very similar.

I%26#39;m with MBC on this one. Two sides to the gambling issue. Yes it pumps money into an area without raising taxes. But at what cost to the community and families?

A guy loses his paycheck on the way home. Another guy robs and steals to support his gambling habit. For some people gambling is just as addictive as a drug.

Up here the gambling seed was planted around twenty years ago with scratch off lottery tickets. Every few years something new is added. A greyhound dog track, Powerball numbers and more recently, video poker machines.

I don%26#39;t know what is growing the fastest. The gambling parlors or the pawn shops.

    HH vs. Myrtle Beach

Have stayed in Myrtle Beach twice and like it there. We aren;t much into going out and doing all of the activities MB has to offer- we have small children. We just want a very nice oceanfront place to stay, the beach and sun. Whay does HH have that is better than MB- can anyone compare the two?

    HH vs. Myrtle Beach

We don%26#39;t have a boardwalk. We do have world class tennis and golf. Our beach is considered among the top ten nationwide.

HHI is mainly condos and not hotels, though there are a few around. great for families.

We have Greg Russell for the Kids, Also Shannon Tanner. No cost, just be there on time. The Sandbox is a childrens museum.

We have wildlife. imagine your kids face to face with a White Heron, or an Egret, not to mention Alligators and deer.

We have plenty of places to admire the wildlife. Pinckney Island, The preserve in Sea Pines, The audubon preserve.

Our coastal discovery museum has exhibits and walks. some cover the loggerhead turtle, or our gullah culture, or this island before the tourists.

Harbortown, and its famous peppermint stick lighthouse, Shelter Cove with its shops and marina. South Beach and the Salty Dog cafe.

We have 200 restaurants and the usual putt-putt.

Com%26#39;on down and have a great time.

    Fishing on Hilton Head

I am renting in a beach house in Sea Pines for a week in late August. I was wondering if there are any areas to fish within the plantation.

    Fishing on Hilton Head

Most of our lagoons are stocked. If you are owner resident of Sea Pines you can fish without a license there. Otherwise you need to purchase one at any tackle shop.

Wonderful Villamare vacation and restaurants on a budget

Hi! Thanks to the help of many on this forum (especially Stan) my family just returned from our fourth consecutive vacation at HHI. Even tropical storm Alberto didn%26#39;t wash out the fun; just added a little extra excitement (and a lot of wind!) to the trip.

First off, let me say that our particular unit, #3528 at Villamare was absolutely gorgeous. The Vacation Company was even kind enough to let us check in over an hour early so that our little one could rest. They came to the room, checked it over and welcomed us personally. The entire condo was extremely well updated, spacious, and comfortable for the 9 of us. The pool was lovely, only wish it was a little bigger due to the number of people staying there, but what do you expect in the middle of June? Also, a nice surprise was that Villamare shares a walkway to/from the Marriott in Palmetto Dunes and my older kids and husband walked over there on more than one occasion to enjoy their outdoor eating area. The beach was the most crowded I had ever seen it, but again, we normally come the first week of June, and according to Greg Russell, beloved performer at Sea Pines, the week we arrived marks the general onslaught of high season.

Next, may I offer a couple of suggestions in regard to restaurants? I don%26#39;t know about anybody else, but we are not millionaires or even hundred thousand-aires. We are a working class family who saves all year to come on vacation. We found several places this trip that we greatly enjoyed at a very reasonable price. To name a couple:

Street Meat: I know it sounds funny, but it%26#39;s actually a very nice place. It%26#39;s in a little shopping plaza off Matthews Road, about a 10 minute ride from Palmetto Dunes. The theme of this restaurant is to take the vest street vendor type food from across the country (think Cincinnati style hot dog or Philly cheese steak) and bring them to one restaurant. One of the owners came out and spoke with us, thanking us for coming and asking how we found out about them. They have only been open a short while (3 months maybe?)

but it was certainly an enjoyable casual dinner.

Jump and Phil%26#39;s: My son is an avid Green Bay Packers fan to put it mildly, so we took him here on his birthday since it boasts that it is the Green Bay Packers connection on HHI. We%26#39;d passed over this place a time or two before, but we won%26#39;t anymore! The staff was extremely frirendly and again, one of the owners (Phil) came out to ask how we liked the place, wanted to know what we%26#39;d like on the TV%26#39;s around us, then came back later to ask how our food was. The service was excellent and they thanked us as we were leaving. This place was a little more expensive but not much and was a first class operation all the way in this poster%26#39;s opinion. Our bill was about $100 without tip for 9 people eating. 6 adults and 3 kids.

Wild Wing Cafe: Most people already know about the Wing but just wanted to give it a shout out because they were such a friendly, bright staff. Several of them stood around and cheered on my 19 year old son as he polished off his ';Braveheart'; wings. He wept actual tears these things were so hot. Very great experience as always at Wild Wing. Lots of fun.

Also, for the budget savvy: For a $5 admission to Sea Pines, you can be highly entetained by Greg Russell under the big oak and your little ones can play to their heart%26#39;s content at the lovely playground they have there in Harbourtown. You can also walk down and stand at the shore of Calibogue Sound and throw shells in the water, or walk down the pier and pull up a crab pot, watch the yachts come in, or just stand in awe of a beautiful sunset. If you%26#39;re lucky you can pull your car over to the side of the road by Lawton Stables and pet a horse or two.... or ten. You really don%26#39;t have to be wealthy to come here and I think that%26#39;s a big misconception!

Wonderful Villamare vacation and restaurants on a budget

I%26#39;m glad you had such a wonderful time--great report---

We loved Srteet Meet the owners are really nice and the food was great. ----Summer

Wonderful Villamare vacation and restaurants on a budget

Lots of other possible budget eating in Port Royal Plaza, the shopping center where Street Meet is.

Next door is Bella Italia, Checkered table Red Sauce Italian and Pizza.

Reilleys North - A northern outpost of the famous Sports bar near Sea

Pines. pretty much the same menu.

Fiesta Fresh - Northern Island outpost of the Mexican Restaurant.

Scratch Kitchen - good Southern cooking - a meat and 2 or three sides. - Sorry closes at 4:00 but will prepare takeout.

Kyoto - Japanese Tapaki table, Sushi, and bento boxes. not as crowded as similar south island places.

Mickey D%26#39;s - no explanation here.

    Stan (hhiguy)

You%26#39;re right, Stan, it looked like there was quite an offering in that little plaza; Scratch Kitchen was on our list of places but when my son opted for Jump and Phil%26#39;s it got bumped. Too bad, because their menu touts something called ';attitude adjusting chocolate pie';.... sounds right up my alley!! I also noticed they served banana pudding; that%26#39;s something we make here at home quite often and I don%26#39;t think I%26#39;ve ever seen it on a dessert menu anywhere. Can%26#39;t wait to get there next summer and try out a whole new list!

What traffic day will be busier?

Expert advice pls. Would you drive down (from va) On Sunday 2nd July or Monday 3rd. I plan on leaving early (8.00AM) either day

    as always tx

What traffic day will be busier?

Just returned from MB- came in on a Monday and left on a Sunday. I will definitley avoid weekend check in and outs from now on. Traveling on Monday was much smoother than Sunday. Even though you are coming in over a holiday time, I would still say arrive on Monday.

What traffic day will be busier?

I would say Monday too....especially because it is a holiday weekend and some will be travelling Saturday and checking in Sunday....so even the lines at check in could be long on Sunday...

    :)

Another vote for Monday. Most people going down for the long Fourth of July week-end would already be there.

I say that Monday will be less busy. Most people will be coming down on the weekend.

I,as well, wold say Monday. Have a great vacation!

monday it shall be...tx to everyone

I%26#39;m flying into Myrtle Beach on 6/28 for a family reunion and my hotel accomodations in sumter south Carolina does not kick in until the 29th. Do condos rent out for a day? Are there any good deals?

  • Best time to visit?

I%26#39;m planning a trip to Charleston for 2007 and would like to know whether mid-April or late August is a better time to go based on weather, events, etc.

My concern in August is it%26#39;s in the middle of hurricane season. Should this be a concern or am I blowing it out of proportion?

Also, we are looking at these time periods rather than summer because we want to see the Parade of Cadets at the Citadel while still being able to enjoy good weather for sightseeing.

Finally, which is the better month to see the plantations in full bloom?

Looking forward to any thoughts. Thanks.

    Best time to visit?

If I had to pick, I%26#39;d go with April.

    1. August is just sooo hot and humid. And yes, it is smackdab in the middle of hurricane season, which is definitely something to consider, see%26#39;ins how expensive your trip will be.

    B. I don%26#39;t know for sure, but it%26#39;s possible that the Citadel doesn%26#39;t have the parades so early in the school year. You might want to check that out! Conversely, April is pretty close to the end of the school year, so they may have finished.

The weather in April can fluctuate between relatively cool and pretty hot. So you%26#39;ll probably be able to hit the beach, even though you can do plenty of that in LA.

It really is pretty here in April, as the Azaleas and other flowers are hitting their stride.

Let%26#39;s see what the other posters say.....

    Best time to visit?

You want to come in the Spring. The first part of April if possible, unless we have a very cold winter and late spring. We won%26#39;t know that until about February. The spring blooming flowers will be at their best. The plantations will be wonderful! It%26#39;s just too, too, hot in August to have many flowers.

I wouldn%26#39;t worry about hurricanes. They may come, probably won%26#39;t. The chances of having one at the exact time that you happen to be here would be even slimmer. However, the heat can be counted on to be there in August and it will make your trip miserable if you plan to do much walking around the city.

Soooooo, if you have a choice, pick April. You won%26#39;t regret it.

    Thanks Floski and Aileen679,

I appreciate the input. It looks like we%26#39;ll be in Charleston in April!

    Thanks again for your help!

    Floski gave some good advise.

April would be my choice. The camillas usually begin to bloom in late November and bloom until mid-March and the azaelas begin blooming about the time the camillas start. Each year is different due to the weather conditions.

The spring is a high tourist period here and the planations are very busy so my advise is to go EARLY in the morning, especially if you are going to tour the houses. Most of the grounds open about 9:00 A.M. and the house tours begin about 10:00 A.M. so be there early and beat the rush!

Be sure that your trip is not during The Citadel Spring Break. That can be checked on The Citadel calendar at www.citadel.edu.

    SCBlossom,

I checked out the Citadel%26#39;s website thanks to your response to a different post of mine (and actually, it%26#39;s based on your reply that I changed from a May trip!)

Thanks again for your help and suggestions. The Citadel already has their 2006-2007 parade calendar up so I%26#39;ll make sure my trip coincides with their schedule. Don%26#39;t know why I%26#39;m so fascinated by this but it sounds so cool! I guess it%26#39;s because we don%26#39;t have a West Point, Virginia Military Institute or Citadel out here on the West Coast.

    October.

    Cool and not too crowded.

Plus, my wife loves the Preservation Society%26#39;s Candlelight tours that are offered in the Fall.

SoCalSon, be sure to go into the chapel, the library and Mark Clark Hall. You might want to call mid-day on the day of the parade to confirm the time because it does change sometimes on short notice.

Enjoy your trip! Hope that you enjoy the parade.

    I almost forgot!

There is a really nice museum on campus, just to the right of the main gate as you come in. I%26#39;ve been to it many times and always enjoy it. I%26#39;d call it a must see.

SCBlossom and Floski - Thanks again for all your great help on this and other posts of mine. We%26#39;ll definitely check out your suggestions on campus as we want to see more than just the parade. Also, good to know about the possible last-minute changes.

Conchobar - Thank you for your recommendation but October is a hard month for us... football season ticket holders... ya know, priorities :-)

Thanks again everyone. I can%26#39;t wait to visit Charleston (but I guess I%26#39;ll have to... just 10 months to go!)

    Weather Forecast

Will be leaving tomorrow. I checked the weather on WPDE and it shows rain through the middle of next week :(

Does it normally rain long or will it pass and clear up. What is it typically like.

    Thanks!

    Weather Forecast

As much as I like to rely on weather reports too- they never seem to be 100% correct. Even if the report says rain it may not turn out that way. Usually when it does rain it is short and then the sun comes out. We were in MB last week with tropical storm Alberto- the weather channel was blowing things way out of proportion and our family at home thougt we were having a terrible vacation due to bad weather, but in reality the weather was only bad for a short period of time and then the sun was out! You can%26#39;t control the weather or believe the reports so just have fun and enjoy the beach!

    Weather Forecast

They are usaly just pop up storms in the afternoon. They may last anywhere from 10-30 minutes if even that long. I believe that you would want the rain since it has been 95 degrees here the past 3 days!

    4-star resorts please

Can someone local to the area or someone who vacations in Myrtle Beach often recommend at least a couple of extra nice oceanfront resorts for us to spend a special family reunion together this summer. Would like the resort to offer something for adults and teens. Would prefer accommodations to have the feel of a condo and not outdated. Thanks for any recommendations.

    4-star resorts please

Cora lBEach would be a good offer. They have newly renovated rooms and many things to do. They have a bowling alley, arcade, pools, general store, resturants, pool side karoke, and many more items. You can also read some of there reviews on the left hand side of the page. good luck.

    4-star resorts please

    I meant Coral Beach. Sorry.

Hampton Inn %26amp; Suites Oceanfront has GORGEOUS suites, VERY clean and a very friendly staff. Definately a top notch hotel. A wonderful breakfast is included as well. Rated the #1 hotel in MB. The 2 bedrooms suites are so nice and comfortable...they have bed space for 8.

If you are looking at ';4 Star'; properties I would suggest the following...

    The Marriott at Grande Dunes

82nd Ave N and Ocean Blvd

really nice property, great beach front, spa on site, great golf deals, nice pool area.

    The Sea Island Inn

58th Ave N and Ocean Blvd

Brand new! Opens May 1st. This property totally renov from the ground up...great restaurant on site, used to offer a number of daily programs, and I%26#39;m sure they will continue to do so.

The Hampton Inn and Suites OF

18th Ave S and Ocean Blvd

Probably one of the nicest hotels on the south end. Roomy suites, excellent staff.

I%26#39;m sure that you%26#39;ll have other suggestions...you may even think of renting large beach house or condos -- I know we had a family get together a few years back and did the beach house thing...it was alot of fun!

A good map to get an idea of locations of various places is our bus route map:

    www.golymo.com

Have fun with the family! :)

Once again, Kingston Plantation. Margate has 4 bedroom units right on the ocean. As does Brighton. Windermere has some 4 bedroom units that are oceanview and most have gorgeous interiors. We prefer Windermere as unlike some folks we don%26#39;t want to be right on the ocean. The fireworks every night get tiresome. We like being able to walk right out to our car without fussing with the elevators. We are a family of 6 and it%26#39;s a nuisance to drag all those groceries and luggage up to the condos. However, to each their own and Kingston has a great variety of units.

kingstonplantation.com or vrbo.com are 2 sites that I would recommend you look at.

Lots of people love Hampton but it%26#39;s too small for us. We prefer the ';home away from home'; feel that we get when we stay in a townhouse or villa.

The water features at Kingston are great and they have many types of activites available all summer. There are 2 restaurants on site. The Tanger Outlets are 1 mile away as is Walmart. There%26#39;s a great place to eat called Southern Market (our favorite lunch spot) 1 mile on the other side of Kingston. If this is your first trip to Myrtle Beach I hope you have a fabulous time! We%26#39;re been going there for nearly 20 years and we drive 12 hours to get there!

    Crescent Shores

Just returned from the Kingston Plantation Embassy Suites. This would be a great place for a family reunion. As an earlier post said, there are condos also at Kingston Plantation, but if you want to be together during the day, but seperate at night the Embassy is a good choice. The hotel is clean, updated, right on the ocean, many pools and eating options.

To illious, Southern Market is closed.I believe the owner died.

Two more upper tier resorts are Southwind and Maissons Se Mur.

Keep in mind the section around Kingston Plantation can be hell getting in and out of in the summertime.

I knew about Southern Market closing, didn%26#39;t know it was because the owner died. Very sad. I will really miss it there.

  • Parking & Crowds at IOP

I am planning on spending the day at the beach on Saturday, July 1st on IOP. Hopefully getting there by 11:00. How bad is the parking, especially that Saturday before the 4th? Any locals that can give me some advice where is my best bet?

    Parking %26amp; Crowds at IOP

Since that is the weekend before the 4th, it will most likely be pretty crowded. Your best bet for parking will be in the lot for the beach front county park, altho I would suggest getting there for sure by 11am. To get there - come straight over IOP connector bridge onto IOP, straight at stop light and you will see the lot on your left just prior to where you have to turn right (or crash into the condos/ocean!). The parking area along the beach has parking meters. (area in front of Windjammer, etc.) Some areas where parking was once available now have something built on them. There are areas where you can park along the road for free and walk to the beach - but be cautious that your are not on anyone%26#39;s private property or too far into the roadway or the vehicle may be towed off.

    Good Bars & restaurant question

Other than Coconut Joes...can anyone recommend a good bar in Isle of Palms. I know the area is limited but thought maybe someone knew of a good place.

Also, anyone been to a hole in the wall restaurant called The Wreck??

    Good Bars %26amp; restaurant question

I have enjoyed having a drink/beer on the deck at The Banana Cabana Restaurant on the IOP. Ate at The Wreck a few years ago and loved it. It is a hole in the wall but the fried seafood was really good.

    Good Bars %26amp; restaurant question

Ever hear of Sullivans Restaurant on Sullivans Island?

I%26#39;ve never eaten at Sullivans but I have heard it is really good. Hopefully some IOP/Sullivans locals will give you an opinion.

    A good bar?

For a beach bar with the younger crowd and loud music, try the Windjammer at the end of the Front Beach, IOP.

For more laid back bar with a little older crowd and music not So loud, try Oceansong Cafe in the shopping center across the street and to your left when coming on the island from the IOP Connector bridge.

On Sullivans Island, try Poe%26#39;s - good bar, great burgers or Dunleavey%26#39;s Pub - Irish pub with pub food.

The Wreck is in Mount Pleasant and is good for fried seafood. Same with Sullivans (on Sullivan%26#39;s Island), just less expensive and not quite as much shabby chic ambiance.

Let me know if you need to know anything else.

  • The Beach

I%26#39;ve been looking for hotels and they always say ';north beach'; or ';south beach';. The map shows quite a stretch and I wanted to know which area has the best beach? We plan to be in the water for our entire vacation. Thanks so much.

    The Beach

If your primary objective visiting the Grande Strand is going to the beach, I would recommend North Myrtle Beach. Less traffic on roads (and on beaches), less noise and congestion than Myrtle Beach. I always tell folks that if the beach is what the vacation is all about go to North Myrtle Beach. If attractions, amusements, rides, arcades, etc...are important, go to Myrtle Beach.

    The Beach

I prefer the northern end of MB also. It%26#39;s a matter of preference, but the south end seems to have hotels just crammed together and the area is congested. The northern end is roomier, but depending where you stay there aren%26#39;t as many things to walk to. The beaches seems to be the same to me though. I guess it just depend what hotel you find and like best. Even with the nicest becah you still need a comfortable place to stay.

If you want the beach in the day and things to do in the evening then I would do SOuth MB but if you want the beach then just relax the rest of the time then I would do north. North is more laid back with more residents than hotels.

It all depends on whose in your group. I have children ages 5 and 2 and they absolutely loved the area near the Breakers last year. Also the area near like the Carolina Opry, Alabama Theatre, I hear is nice. Never stayed in that are before.

My first visit to Myrtle Beach was near the Cherry Grove area in the beginning of August. Personally I thought it was ok. We just did a drive through of the area trying to determine what would be the best area to stay in. We stayed on the south end of MB at Compass Cove and it was a little too crowded and a lot of young people (17-25 crowd). Then we chose the Breakers. Absolutely loved it. The streets were never crowded. It was very quiet there and yet everything we wanted to do was only a few minute drive away. Also the Dayton House is in this area as well.

The Grand Strand is a very large area (60 miles long, according to the Chamber of Commerce). The term ';Myrtle Beach'; is used many times to describe the entire Strand, but that is incorrect.

    - Myrtle Beach is a large area that is served by Highway 17 (also called King%26#39;s Highway), which runs north-south. There is a smaller road through much of MB that is near the beach called Ocean Boulevard.

    - The East-West roads between 17 and Ocean Blvd are numbered sequentially - either North or South. The Pavilion area (the boardwalk and amusement area) is roughly the middle of town. Each road to the North is numbered as __ Ave North. Roads to the south are numbered __ Ave South.

    - The Pavilion area of Myrtle is very crowded and not considered to be the best part of the beach. The Southern end is mostly family resorts/ hotels, and is also crowded. From the Pavilion until about 17th Ave South is very busy. This would be the ';South Beach'; area.

    - To the Northern End, you have a stretch of homes, followed by some very nice hotels between 67th Ave North and 77th Ave North. It is quieter here, but more expensive. This would be the ';North Beach'; area. NOT to be confused with the actual town of North Myrtle Beach.

    - Several miles north of there is the actual town of North Myrtle Beach. Just like MB, there is a downtown, with Avenues running north and south of Main Street. North Myrtle has a much better (larger, cleaner) beach than Myrtle, but there are fewer hotels and fewer attractions. There are more homes and timeshares in this area.

    - Which is best? ALL OF IT!! It just depends on where you want to be. Our family has stayed at the Sea Mist for several years (about 8th Ave South in MB) and loved it. We have also stayed at the Caravelle (about 70th Ave North in MB) and loved it. And we have stayed in North Myrtle Beach and loved it.

    Where to stay?

    Hello,

We are looking into going to HH for the first time, and with 4 kids.....One 16yr old girl, one 13yr old boy, and two 10yr old girls. All of the kids like to interact with other kids there age, and both my husband and I like a place where we can split up, and take the kids to the pool, and the beach without being too far away from each other. We all enjoy a more upbeat surrounding, rather than a laid back one. Any ideas on where we should stay? Thanks in advance.

    Where to stay?

    Hi Sunless,

I don%26#39;t know if you%26#39;ve booked your trip yet, but I just saw your post and thought I%26#39;d offer an opinion. I just returned from a trip to Hilton Head with my family which included my 19 year old son, 13 and 11 year old daughters and 4 year old son. We stayed within Palmetto Dunes plantation and things were very laid back there. You mention a more ';upbeat'; surrounding...... I think you might really enjoy the Seacrest resort. As I understand it, it%26#39;s one of the nicest places on the island to stay and you are situated in the Forest Beach area, which is a great center of activity. You are right across from Coligny plaza, which offers a lot of restaurants, shops, even a grocery store and within a couple of blocks are a small water park, mini golf, and more great restaurants. A great idea is to rent bikes (almost everyone does). Any place you rent from will bring them right to you and you can enjoy the miles of bike paths that run throughout the island. Also, Seacrest if oceanfront and you could probably sit at the pool and see your kids on the beach you%26#39;re that close. Please understand, though, that the overall feel of Hilton Head is pretty laid back; not a lot of nightlife (most places close at 9 or 10) no neon lights, lots of eco friendliness.... definitely not a place to get crazy! Hope this helps and have a great time!!

    Where to stay?

Thank you for your information. I%26#39;ll look into your suggestions. I really appreciate them so much!

There are a number of Seacrests available on VRBO or Cyberrentals.

or you can call Tiffany at the Vacation Company. They specialize in SeaCrest Rentals.

Stops between Hilton Head and Richmond, VA

We%26#39;re doing the long drive Saturday (6/25) w/ 2 kids, 8 and 5. We will need several stops along the way during this trek. Any suggestions, other than South of the Border (yuk!) TIA!!

Stops between Hilton Head and Richmond, VA

In terms of breaking up your trip in relatively equal incriments, if you want to stop twice from Richmond and still be somewhere with restaurants, etc., I might consider stopping around Rocky Mount, NC (125 miles) and in Florence, SC (175 more miles). From Florence, it%26#39;s about 180 miles to HHI. Stopping in Benson, NC (at the conjunct of I-95 and I-40) is closer to the other 2 distances, but there isn%26#39;t much there.

If you just want to stop once, Fayetteville, NC would be close to halfway.

    Drive safely!

Stops between Hilton Head and Richmond, VA

I%26#39;m with the Rocky Mount, but consider Smithfield exit 97. Great shopping at JR. Also at Florence stop at the Darlington Exit. Lots of Restaurants of the Road Type (Dennys, Perkin Pancakes et al.)

    Stan (Hhiguy)

Good advice, Stan. That%26#39;s the US-52 exit (Darlington). There is a Ruby Tuesday%26#39;s and Fatz right off that exit and a few decent low-budget hotels there if you need them also. I worked 8 miles from this exit all the past year : )

Thanks. I expect the first ';how much longers'; and ';are we there yets'; around Petersburg, so I%26#39;ll need a break as much as they will.

A bit further south, you can stop at Santee, SC. The South Carolina Welcome Center there is large and very nice. You can pick up maps, books, and coupons.

Santee has all the usual chain restaurants; but we like ';The Veranda'; restaurant, which is assoicated with the Best Western Santee, just off I-95 to the east. It has a very pleasant, attractive atmosphere and really good meals for adults and children.

Santee is a resort area on the shores of Lake Marion, so you may find some other ways to ';stretch your legs'; while you are there.

  • Coral Beach Hotel, any info would be great

Going to the Coral Beach on 7/1/06. Have heard good and bad reviews on it, just have a few more questions. What%26#39;s within walking distance to the hotel? Are the rooms outdated? If coming from CIncinnati, OH, about how long to Myrtle Beach????

    Thanks in advance!

Coral Beach Hotel, any info would be great

THe rooms are not outdated. They have been/are being renovated this year. You will need a car or less you want to walk a good way.

    First trip to Charleston!

My boyfriend and I are visiting Charleston for the first time over 4th of July weekend. We just booked the French Quarter Inn (tell me if its not good and I can change!) but now looking for recs for restaurants and must dos. I really do not know anything about the city. We are in our late 20%26#39;s and total foodies. Nothing stuffy..but more cool and unique. Any suggestions?? Also, are there any must do sites?

    First trip to Charleston!

My husband %26amp; I got just got back from Charleston last week. We had dinner at Ansons, Magnolia%26#39;s and 82 Queen, Charleston Grill. All were good but Magnolia%26#39;s was my favorite for both food and ambience. Some of the other restaurants along East Bay looked good such as Slightly North of Broad (SNOB), High Cotton...I%26#39;m blanking on the others, but if you walk down East Bay you will see quite a few restaurants with excellant reviews that look great. Also, next time we go,I%26#39;d like to try Jestines Kitchen for good Southern Cook%26#39;in.

As far as things to do walk around the historic district, be sure not to miss the Battery, Chalmers Street (cobblestone street) and, in fact you can go into a house at 17 Chalmers (now an art gallery) built in the 1700%26#39;s, see Rainbow Row, and don%26#39;t miss Church street close to East Bay side (I believe that%26#39;s the area where the old theatre is), that area is especially cool. Meeting Street is a must-do.

    Go for a carriage ride--must-do

Do a house tour--We did the one on the Battery, Alson-? House.

As far as places to stay I don%26#39;t remember seeing the French Quarter Inn. We stayed at Charleston Place and would not stay there again. If I were going again soon, I%26#39;d stay at the Market Pavilion Hotel or if we want a B%26amp;B, 2 Meeting Street Inn. HAVE FUN!

    Difference between beaches

What is the difference between North Myrtle Beach and Myrtle Beach? Which one would be recommended for family of 4 (kids ages 15 %26amp; 9)? If we were to stay in North MB, what place would you recommend? Looking for affordable accomodations.

    Thanks!

    :)

    Difference between beaches

We like the NMB area. A little quieter. Beach area a little wider. We stay in the Crescent Beach area of NMB. We have used 3 different realty companies for rentals. They all have web sites and show pics of the condos.

Condo-World there rates include linens (bed and bath - no beach towels) and departure maid cleaning. www.condo-wolrd.com. Have had no problems with them or the rental units.

Grand Strand Vacations - www.grandstrandvacations.com. They include departure maid cleaning, you can rent linens through them. Again no problem with them or the rental unit.

Century 21 Thomas Realty - www.century21thomas.com. They also include departure cleaning and will rent linens to you. No problem here either.

WE have stayed at Crescent Shores Condos (very nice - higher priced) and Ocean Bay Club (ok not as expensive). Both have pools, hot tubs and lazy rivers.

Any questions let me know. Hope this info helps.

    Difference between beaches

It%26#39;s all just a matter of personal likes. Some people swear by one and some people like the other.

MB is the main area of the Grand Strand. Center of town is more or less at the end of Rt 501.

The main attraction of MB is the pavilion area. Arcades and amusement park type entertainment. It really draws in the crowds and traffic. Other gift shops and entertainment typenshops along the strip. A lot of ';cruisers'; just driving up and down the strip at night. Read a trip report post a few minutes ago on another thread. From mid-day on it was impossible to get to their accomidations on Ocean Blvd.

There are places 20-30 blocks to the north and south. Close enough to the action but out of the traffic and congestion. Short drive to major attractions like Broadway At The Beach and Barefoot Landing.

The ';north'; end of MB is up around Kings Road and that area. Very nice accomodations around there. Little congestion from ';cruisers or Pavilion visitors. Again a short drive to major attractions.

NMB is a seperate town/city about 20 miles north of the center of MB. The south end of NMB is at Barefoot Landing. NMB is made up of four beach sections. Windy Hill to the south. Cresent, Ocean Drive and at the north end, Cherry Grove.

The south end is mostly high rise condo resorts. More north you go the smaller the buildings get. Cherry Grove has many beach houses and four and five story condos.

Very family friendly. Little traffic on Ocean Blvd. No attractions to draw people in except for the vacationers staying there. Each section has it%26#39;s own little beach front shop area with beach supplies and ice cream shops. Just like the other areas you%26#39;re just a short drive to other attractions.

You%26#39;re between a rock and a hard place. The 9 year old would be fine in NMB but the 15 would enjoy MB more. Tough decision.

If it means anything. I raised three kids vacationing in NMB. They never stayed in MB. They never saw the Pavilion until their Senior Trips. Now that they have kids of their own.....NMB.

This is Elliott Realty site. Should give some ideas...

    northmyrtlebeachtravel.com/book/query.html

I agree with pop. We raised 4 skids on vacations to NMB and now go with adult children and grandkids. They all love NMB. Very relaxing and they never wanted for a thing to do. It is all what you make of it. Plenty of other kids for them to make friends and have FUN.

Stayed in NMB last year and MB this year. There are pros and cons to both areas. I feel MB has nicer stores and restaruants along hwy 17. NMB is a little quieter, but there are northern parts of MB that are nice too. Getting into the heart of MB is a bit congested and the hotel are crammed together- some newer and some old. I much liked staying in the northern section of MB best.

We have vacationed in NMB for 18 yrs. MB is much more crowded and getting around on the roads there were a nightmare. We had our kids on vacation with us of course and they always had a great time in NMB. There were enough T-shirts shops, souvenirs shops, smaller arcades to keep them satisfied, as well as all the beach activites. We would drive down to MB one night for them to go to The Pavilion and that seemed enough to satisfy.

www.northmyrtlebeach.com Grand Strand Realty is great to work with! www.vrbo.com you%26#39;re dealing with the owners directly

  • I'm Back!!! My trip report...

Hey Guys! I%26#39;m back! Okay, sorry if it gets long.

First of all, if you remember, we decided to stay at Southern Breeze Motel. Well...We got there around 10:30 on Thursday night, and they had our room screwed up. Everytime my husband called, he confirmed we had a top floor. We get there and have a bottom floor, not too big of a deal. BUT...when we looked at the room, our window and door was about 2 feet away from the pool, and no ocean view at all! That%26#39;s why you get oceanfront rooms, to see the ocean. So, after my husband and I argued with them for a few minutes and they said they had NOTHING else available, we were ready to take our money and leave. Then I saw that their sign still said ';Vacancy';, when I inquired about this I was told ';Oh, that%26#39;s because we have another motel.'; And get this, they DID have vacancy there (grrr). So we finally reasoned with them and they moved us to their other motel, Twilight Surf Motel. We still had to stay on the bottom floor the first night, but were moved to the top floor first thing the next morning and stayed there for the rest of the trip. The rooms were really spacious and clean though, I do have to give them credit for that. Looked as if it was recently remodeled.

Anyway, the motel deal was the ONLY downside to our trip. We were on the southern end so the beach was never too crowded. There was a pancake house straight across the street where we ate in the mornings, it was really nice and they had birds at the door when you walk in. There was a sign telling you not to stick your fingers in b/c they bite, but the gray and white one kept sticking his head up to the cage opening. I couldn%26#39;t resist! He loved his head to be rubbed.

When we went to both Hard Rock and Planet Hollywood, we were seated right away! No lines at either place.

We went to the Pavillion, and only our 2 year old rode anything, and he got to do that for free because of his age! It is such a shame that they are tearing that place down, for no reason.

We learned the hard way to NOT drive Ocean Blvd after mid-day to get back to the room. It was like the traffic was always at a stand-still. After that, we always took King%26#39;s Hwy to the avenue closest to our motel. It can get crowded too, but nothing like Ocean Blvd.

Since we were so far south of all the action, we drove to the Pavillion area to walk around and go in a few shops. We paid to park in the Pavillion%26#39;s parking garage once, then I found another place that was absolutely free to park. There weren%26#39;t any ';no parking'; signs, or meters or anything. Going towards the Pavillion from 17th Avenue South, right before you get to the Pavillion there is a Subway (On King%26#39;s Hwy), make a right here. Not even 1/10 mile down there is a huge sandy area on the right, looks like there was once a building there, that%26#39;s where we parked all day for free.

The funniest thing happened on Sunday night. We were all sitting on the balcony and the beach patrol drives up the beach and stops. He shines a flashlight in the weeds and this man jumps up and runs into the back parking lot of our motel. This man is so drunk he can barely walk, it was too funny. He had on a pair of pants, BUT one leg was full length, and the other was cut off really high on his thigh like shorts lol. So the beach patrol officer gets in his truck and starts to drive away (he was going to let this man go). Then the guy does something really stupid. He pees all over the side of an SUV parked there!!! Beach patrol gets back out of the truck and asks him what he%26#39;s doing, ';Just standing here'; he says lol. We could hear him all the way up where we were. I don%26#39;t know what happened after that b/c I couldn%26#39;t control my laughter and I didn%26#39;t want to draw attention to myself lol.

Well, sorry it was so long. I have tons more to tell, but this is long enough.

    I'm Back!!! My trip report...

Oh, please do go on, I am enjoying the post! I was really hoping the Southern Breeze would have checked out as a decent place. I know the other hotel was owned by the same people, the website was the same, but for the price and the size of the room, I wanted to give it a shot. Would you recommend a return visit? I really like the smaller hotels, and less crowded beach areas. I am glad you enjoyed your vacation! I always enjoy the southern end of Myrtle, it does seem to be less crowded, and just as beautiful for a lot less money! Write away traveler, at least one ear here willing to give a listen! As always I%26#39;m looking for a new place to give my hard earned moolah to!

    I'm Back!!! My trip report...

LOL. At least someone was interested.

Yeah, I would definitely return to this motel. Even though they had everything kind of messed up in the beginning, they made the rest of the stay pleasant. The room was REALLY clean and nice, definitely more that what I expected for the price we paid. Even the bathrooms were clean and you didn%26#39;t think twice about taking your shoes off when you went in. (I have encountered this before, YUCK!) The only problem was that the office closes at 11PM, so if you need anything you need to get it before then. The cleaning ladies were all super nice and made sure we had enough of everything and were there bright and early.

The view from the balcony was great. And it was so quiet at this motel. Not one time did we hear anything through the walls, or outside of the door. Maybe because when you check in they have this number to call to report loud noises and nuisances (sp?)

We didn%26#39;t go into the pool, but it always looked super clean and I never saw any sand in it. There were plenty of lounge chairs around it, too.

So, even though our experience wasn%26#39;t so good upon check-in, it was great thereafter. When we return to MB next year we are thinking of staying here again. It was a great motel, especially with a 2-year-old. I think maybe b/c it seemed more family oriented than a party place.

Just let me know if you have any more questions. And I hope that if you do decide to stay here, you have as good of an experience as we did (aside from the check in problem). If you request a top floor, make sure it is noted on your receipt when you get in in the mail. That is where they told us it should be noted. We will make sure of that next time.

Love the post....I also love the south end of Myrtle Beach. Love the small hotel/motels as well. Going myself in 22 days..YEAH!! Loved the story and hope you post more!! Tell me about the room you stayed in, was it a two bedroom or one! Can%26#39;t beat the price either!! Thanks!!

It was 2 bedroom. When you first walk in the door you are in a room with one bed and a couple of chairs. Then there is another door there that you can close for provacy, you go through that and there was the bathroom on one side and on the other side were the fridge, stove, sink, microwave, coffee maker, and toaster. There was a table big enough for 3 chairs around it. This room also had 2 beds a dresser, a few chairs and a television. Then, the best part, the door to the oceanfront balcony!!!

I was so suprised at how spacious the rooms were. And the little room you could close off (when you first walk in) was great if you have a large party and someone prefers that privacy. We just used it for our bags though lol.

I want to go back so bad now that I have been talking about it lol. I love, love, love Myrtle Beach!

I have to say I%26#39;m enjoying reading about your trip too! I%26#39;m leaving for MB 2 weeks from today, and I%26#39;m getting so excited!!!!!

We are also staying on the south end, at the Polynesian near 10th Ave. South, so your posts are not only enjoyable but really helpful. Not to mention, I wrote down the name of both of the motels you mentioned, just in case ours is a hole in the wall and we have to relocate. LOL!

Loved the story about the drunk guy!

17 days till I depart to the sandy shores of Myrtle for a wonderful eight days.........I haven%26#39;t bought groceries for three weeks, just saving my cash and stuffing away at that nest egg for beach related spending! I always try to clean out the fridge of all perishables before a trip anyway.

briezer_19.....both of the hotels have websites if you would like to browse them, www.southernbreezemotel.com and www.twilightsurfmotel.com

BeachButton.....I%26#39;m not sure of your drive time, but I am a firm believer of the weekend vacation. I set it up at work to leave early on a Friday at around noon, already packed and van loaded Thursday night, hit the road from work on Friday and be at the beach in no time! Enjoy a couple nights and head back home on Sunday afternoon. It%26#39;s a great stress reliever. That%26#39;s why I like the small. cheap hotels so much, I can have a great getaway for the weekend and get some sand in my shorts for less than 200 bucks (minus gasoline, depending on your motorized mode of transportation, mine loves the stuff!) Also I have met some great people at the small motels, feel more at home and a cozier atmosphere. I don%26#39;t like to feel crowded or rushed, I like the laid back stuff, I%26#39;m there for the sun, sand, and the sound of the seagulls calling......not for booze, broads, and beach parties. I%26#39;m definately looking for that parking area you talked about, I usually park behind the Ripley%26#39;s Haunted Mansion at that area and pay the ten dollars for parking, the guy always tells me it%26#39;s good for the week and I always keep my stub and hold him to his word, ten dollars versus ';0';, sounds like good odds to me! I have had good stays with Rob and Julie at the Gazebo Inn, www.gazeboinn.com, some of the reviews on here as of late have been unflattering, but I watched Rob clean the pool every morning and Julie at the front desk was always courteous to me, Dave is at the desk sometimes, he is the former owner, but they are all family, and I personally have never had a problem. I am staying on the northern end this visit, at the Carnival Motor Inn, www.carnivalmotorinn.com, a new place I%26#39;m trying, but very affordable for an OF efficiency, I%26#39;ll post my findings after I return of course. I may have to stop and look at the hotels you used on your visit, my father%26#39;s birthday is coming up and I had planned on finding him a gift while on my visit. I had toyed with the idea of paying for him a hotel room for a long weekend, and giving it to hil as a gift. He%26#39;ll have some time off at the end of August, that may work out perfectly! The twilight or southern breeze may fit the bill. I%26#39;m glad you enjoyed your trip, and I hope mine is just as enjoyable.

    relocating

hi all. I live in nj and just got a job at the airport in north charleston. Im just wondering if anyone has any ideas on apartments or townhouses around that area (within 30 miles) of the airport that are affordable (500-700 a month?). Im also young and single so hoping to get a place pretty close to the beach and nightclubs or where its happening. is this possible? any comments would be appreciated

    relocating

Yes. All of this is is possible. There are plenty of apartments/TH that fit the bill. But, you really have many options, close to the airport or close to the beach. It%26#39;s up to you. It is about 30 minutes to the actual beach from the airport. But you could live anywhere in between there. Any area of town is good for you because the airport is rather close to everything. For your situation, to be closer to Folly Beach, (in order of closest to the airport to the furthest) try West Ashley or James Island or Folly Beach ( folly being the furthest from the airport); to be closer to Sullivan%26#39;s Island and Isle of Palms beach, (again, closest to furthest from the airport) try Daniel Island (which you may not find anything there in your price range..and beware of the terrible mosquitos at night), Mount Pleasant and Isle of Palms. North Charleston is fine,it is the closest to the airport) but you really have to look at the area surrounding it, and if you lived in North Charleston try a higher priced one, and within a gated community if you are really worried about security. North Charleston is the furthest from the beach.

  • The weather

I have been monitoring the weather........looks like rain may be moving in next week. If there%26#39;s a 60 % chance of T-storms, how likley is it to storm? All day?

    The weather

Usually this time of year the t-storms are sporadic, and mainly in the late afternoon. Luckily, there are no big tropical storms looming at this point. Don%26#39;t worry about it.

    The weather

The rule here is if there is an 80% chance of rain we may get wet...we%26#39;ve had 50 to 60% chance of rain for the last 3 weeks, and I think we%26#39;ve seen rain one afternoon...usually with the cooler off in the afternoon and the sea breeze kicking in, it may produce a bit of a shower, but usually (unless we go tropical!) no gully washers!

    :)

I was starting to get a bit depressed when I saw the weather for next week - thanks for the clarification.

Any thoughts on that so-called ';disturbance'; by the Bahamas with ';broad circular rotation'; moving West by Northwest? Please tell me this happens all the time and it doesn%26#39;t necessarily mean anything.....

    www.wpde.com/weather/tropical/default.asp

This time of year you will get a number of disturbances in the tropics...most will just produce pretty decent rain storms at the beach if they make shore, or decent waves if they dont. We have been real fortunate in the last 5 years or so not to have any major storms come our way.

The current system just north of the Bahamas is really not that organized and if we get anything from it, it may be some rain....

carolina winds how far is it from broadwayon the beach?

I%26#39;am not quite sure about the location of carolina winds? any feedback would be helpful, thanks

carolina winds how far is it from broadwayon the beach?

Carolina Winds is at 200 76th Ave. North, according to Mapquest.com you are 5.88 miles from Broadway at the Beach. You would leave the hotel, go back out to N. Kings Hwy and take a left, go 4 miles, and take a right on 21st Ave., go another mile and you will see Broadway on the right, can%26#39;t miss it.

carolina winds how far is it from broadwayon the beach?

Or a quicker route would be to turn left out of your hotel onto Ocean Blvd....stay on that until you reach 38th Ave N, turn right to the 2nd stoplight (Grissom Pkwy) turn left and Broadway at the Beach is just past the next light at 29th Ave N.

Carolina Winds is in an area we refer to as ';The Avenues';...is a bit more laid back that the area around the downtown and the south end of MB....you are about in between Broadway at the Beach and Barefoot Landing. You also have a number of restaurants, as well as grocery and beach wear stores within walking distance from that property.

    :)

Carolina WInds is basically the next to last hotel in the northern

part of Myrtle Beach. Very nice residential section, beach not as crowded. Grocery store (Food Lion or Land) one block away.

We have stayed the past two years at Carolina Winds in a 3 bed/2 bath oceanfront condo with wrap-around balcony. We loved it!!

If you come in on Rt. 501, be sure to take Rt 22 (past Aynor I think)

Then take the first exit to Myrtle Beach, you should then be heading

south. 76th Ave is not too far.

    carolina winds or compass cove?

Hi, I have finally narrowed it down to 2 hotels, just wondering if anyone could help with any feedback, Thanks in advance.

    carolina winds or compass cove?

We have stayed at Carolina WInds the past two years. We love it. You can%26#39;t beat the location! Northern end of Myrtle Beach, nice residential section. Convenient to everything!

Never been to Compass Cove but it looks huge. Much bigger than Carolina Winds. If you have kids, they might enjoy Compass more.

But then again, my three had a great time at Carolina Winds.

(ok, this probably didn%26#39;t help much; both look great; Good luck)

    carolina winds or compass cove?

Well we%26#39;ve stayed at compass cove and it was nice (Pinnacle building elevator was too slow however. Pinnacle has recently been updated and the Mariner building is very nice)

Never stayed at Carolina Winds, but from the rates I got when looking they are much-much-much more cheaper than Compass cove. i.e. 3-BR suite at compass would cost over $1,000 for everything for about 3 nights. Carolina is just about $800. It looks to be clean at Carolina winds.

I would check the ratings on various websites including this one, yahoo travel, expedia, etc. and just see what other people have to say. Only take into consideration the most recent reviews (06) usually a lot of changes can happen from year-to-year and some problems could have been repaired.

Both facilities seem to offer the same amenities. However Carolina seems to be not as big and in the quieter section of MB. All depends on the group you are with.

    Bed & Breakfast

My husband and I will be in Charleston for one night only, without the kids. We%26#39;re from Ohio, visiting Spartanburg and my parents.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good B%26amp;B? I looked at Governor%26#39;s House, but its a little out of my price range. I%26#39;m looking for a charming, historical place.

thanks for any and all responses.

    michelle

    Bed %26amp; Breakfast

You could look into the King George IV, Barksdale House, or Jasmine House. My vote would go to Jasmine, but they are ALL nice, have informed saff/ inkeepers, and are walking distance to everything. Enjoy!

  • Compass Cove or Bay watch with a four year old

Which is the better choice?? My child loves the water so pools and lazy rivers are important.. Thanks for you help

Compass Cove or Bay watch with a four year old

Depends on if you want to stay in North Myrtle or Southern End of Myrtle beach.

Both have about the same. Compass may have a little bit more to offer as relating to the pools. Bay Watch may be cleaner, less crowded and in a much nicer area. They both have a lazy river and pools. I don%26#39;t know if baywatch has an indoor but I liked that about compass.

If you are alone with the 4-year old i would go with Bay Watch. Never stayed there before but it seems to be ok. Check out the comments on this site and yahoo travel. They are pretty acurate if the majority leans one way or the other.

Compass Cove or Bay watch with a four year old

We stayed at the Baywatch resort with kids last summer. There are a number of pools there both indoor and out. Also a lazy river outside and one inside. Baywtach is located in North Myrtle Beach. I%26#39;m not familiar with your other choice, but another post said it was at the southern end of MB so they are a distance apart. NMB is quiet and family oriented, where the southern end of MB is busier. Baywtach was a nice place to stay. Only one restaruant on-site and I wouldn%26#39;t recommend it- slow service, just okay food (although that could have changed since last year). At night the Baywatch has huge lights on top of each building that light up the beach- this was a big favortie for my family as we like to be on the sand at night. Good luck with your decision. If you get on the North Myrtle Beach forum page there may be some recent feedback about Baywatch.

  • Myrtle Beach...good for kids?

I am trying to plan a vacation for this August with my wife and 3 year old son. We were going to go to Mexcio, but we heard alot of good things about Mrytle Beach. My wife and I have never been and I am wondering what kind of activities are there for my son to enjoy, and My wife is looking to really just relax on the beach. Is Myrtle Beach a place to do these things?

    Myrtle Beach...good for kids?

I dont want to sound jaded, but MB is a wonderful place to do just that! The beach is is really nice, you can be as close to the action or as far away from it as you want to be....as for the little guy, I%26#39;m sure a sand bucket and a shovel are in order! There are a number of places you can stay that have wonderful kiddie waterparks too!

At that age, I would highly suggest the Ripleys Aquarium at Broadway at the Beach ..the touch tank and Ray Bay there alone would really amaze him! The Childrens Museum, tho%26#39; not huge, is really a great adventure too..of course there is the Pavilion with all the rides and cotton candy to go along with it. and this is the last year for that...plus so many other activities, I%26#39;m sure other posters will list.....and we cant forget about Waccatee Zoo, a small family run zoo...

There is deffinately a reason why MB is at the top of most travel lists for best family beach vacation year after year.....

    :)

    Myrtle Beach...good for kids?

Yes Myrtle is a good place to do these things.

If your wife wants to relax on the beach North Myrtle would be your best bet. It is a little less crowded and still in the area of the activities for your 3-year old. Or also the Northern end of Myrtle Beach near like the Grande Shores Hotel (Good Rates and pretty nice reviews)

We are going on August 16. We chose the Breakers Paradise Towers. Our son last year loved the pool attractions and cried when we told him it was time to go. He likes the beach but sometimes in August the waves can be a little choppy and scary for a 5-year old.

    Other entertainment/attractions good for a 3-year old

    -Nascar Speedpark @ the Beach

    -Ripley%26#39;s Aquarium @ Broadway @ the beach

    -Pavilion or Family Kingdom

-MagiQuest- @ broadway @ the beach

-Myrtle Waves @broadway @ the beach.

    Broadway @ the Beach from what I have asked before on this site is closer to the Northern end of Myrtle Beach. Which is also just as quiet as ';North Myrtle Beach';

Some nice hotels that are recommended by family, friends, and the reviews on this site and others like yahoo.

-The Breakers (Paradise Towers Only for me, newer and cleaner)_

    -Grande Shores Resort

    -Avista Resort (www.avistaresort.com)

    -The Sea Island Resort (www.seaislandonthebeach.com)

-The Marriott Grande Dunes (North Myrtle a little costly)

    -Sea Mist Resort (www.seamist.com)

    -Coral Beach Resort

    -Kingston Plantation

Anyone have any other ideas??? I would also like to know more of what to do other than what I have listed.

Also DS1104: Where will you be coming from? This is an issue for some. If you want to drive, fly, etc.

We are partial to the Cherry Grove section of North Myrtle Beach. We have a 4 and 2 year old, and when are in Cherry Grove, we stay at the beach 3-4 hours a day. We also enjoy the pier in Cherry Grove. They have fishing, fishing gear, observatory tour, ice cream, restaurant/grill just opened...they even sell beer. Our kids love it. Myrtle Beach Pelicans is a single A (upper) baseball team. Tickets are cheap and fun for the family. Ballpark has a picnic area and a playground also if kids get bored. There are countless golf courses and mini golf. However, the reason our family goes to the beach is the beach!

MrsMaryland......I will be flying from Chicago, and then renting a car to get around.

If you go to Myrtle Intl%26#39; you wouldn%26#39;t want to drive all the way to North Myrtle Beach. At least I wouldn%26#39;t, especially if it were my first time there. Myrtle Beach is 60 miles long and I think if I%26#39;m not mistaken the airport is on the southern end of MB.

MB Concierge: am I right about that.

So any of the hotels that I listed except maybe the Avista Resort and Marriott Grand Dunes would be good for location. Although, I am pretty sure your wife would enjoy the Marriott Grand Dunes. They have a spa and the pool area isn%26#39;t like normal hotel pools (according the what they said when I called) and what pictures they have online.

MrsMaryland....Why wouldn%26#39;t you want to drive. Is it because of the lenght you would have to drive, or are the roads to confusing.....Let me know.

MrsMaryland....Why wouldn%26#39;t you want to drive. Is it because of the lenght you would have to drive, or are the roads to confusing.....Let me know.

Ihave to say that Coral Beach is a great palce for kids and all the activites are good to.

Mrs. Maryland you are correct about the air port. It is located on King Hwy right across from the end of Ocean Blvd.

Here is also something else good for kids and adults. It is great excercise also. It is Maze Mania.

    HEre is there website

    http://mazemaniasc.com/

    DS1104:

It just depends on how far you want to drive from the airport. Usually when I fly, I don%26#39;t want to be any more than 15 miles or 20 minutes from the airport. Although I live in Maryland driving from 15-20 miles from the airport (Reagan or Dulles) can take me 45 minutes -to over an hour depending on traffic so it just depends on how far you want to drive and where you want to stay. I don%26#39;t mind driving, I drive from Maryland to Myrtle for the past 3-4 years.

-Since the Marriott Grande Dunes is only about 6 miles from the airport you would love that one. It is gorgeous from the website. Not quite Mexico but it looks like it can be a type of hotel you would find in Mexico. (www.myrtlebeachmarriottresort.com)

    4th of July Beach Trip

My family and I are leaving to go to Myrtle Beach the week of 4th of July. I am so excited. This has become a famliy tradition for the past 4 years.

I am trying to do something different this year as far as eating. We always go to the same places. I looked on line and there is a Japanese resturant at Broadway at the Beach. Does anyone know if it is anygood. I love to eat at places like that but have never done it at the beach. Also, any good breakfast places you know of. We never eat breakfast out. I though it might be somethng new and fun to do.

    4th of July Beach Trip

    Seafood: try Sea Captains house.

    Steak: try Carolina Roadhouse

    These are my 2 favorites.

    4th of July Beach Trip

Thanks...The sea captains house is next door to our hotel. We are staying at the Caribbean Resort and Villas.

I have eaten at the Japanese Restaurant at Broadway and thought it was pretty good. Check and see if they take reservations. Things will be extremely crowded that week.

There are tons of good breakfast places but if you want to take a short drive one morning, you can%26#39;t beat the breakfast at Nibbles on the Surfside Pier. Their breakfast is wonderful plus you are looking at the ocean.

    melhai

Looks like we will be at the beach during the same week, I would like to try a day cruise myself.

My teenagers just returned from Senior week at MB and they ate at that Japanese restaurant at Broadway and they said it was ok, rice was hard, steak was dry but I will be trying it out on my trip 6/30-7/9.

    amhsc,

Do they charge to walk on that pier?

I would like to try it out for breakfast.

    7 more days!!

If you like Japanese definitly go to Miyabi in Murrells Inlet. They are the best in town if you ask me. You always get way more food than you can eat and the prices are good. My husband took me there over 10 years ago and that is the one place that we HAVE to go everytime we visit the beach. We have small children and have also taken them there without any problems. If you like BBQ try Big D%26#39;s BBQ barn next to the old Waccamaw Pottery. They have the best BBQ and have a great buffet with all the country fixins. Our other place that we have to go is to Mr Sub. Depending on where you stay, there is one in Surfside on 544 right across the street from Ocean Lakes and one on 9th Ave North and Hwy 17 at the Pavilion. They have the best subs. Try a #10 hot with extra vinager and oil. If you want steak or prime rib try J Edwards on (I think) 27th Ave Sunth and Hwy 17. They have great prime rib and they even have early bird specials. Hope you have a great trip. We are trying Florida this year instead.

    richmond VA ?

we will be hitting richmond somewhere around 9 am tomorrow. Should we stay on 95 or use 295. is traffic so bad we should think about leaving earlier? thanks

    richmond VA ?

RIC traffic is not very bad at all (nothing like DC). Don%26#39;t bother with 295.

    richmond VA ?

I go through frequently on 95 and have never regreted it except for once when, unfortunately, there was an accident.

Stick with I-95. The views of Richmond are interesting, too.

Stick to 95 (if you haven%26#39;t left already)

295 is only necessary when there is construction in the Richmond city limits or Petersburg area.

If you aren%26#39;t sure about construction, try contacting your local AAA (or CAA). They will tell you all construction occuring along the highways you plan to take.

    Best Brunch in town ?

Going to fly into Charleston on Sunday around lunch time ..

    any recommendations for brunch ?

    Best Brunch in town ?

I would have to say High Cotton on East Bay Street. You definitetly won%26#39;t be disappointed! The Barbados Room (inside Mills Hotel at 115 Meeting Street) is also good. Enjoy your brunch!!!!

    Best Brunch in town ?

Looking for southern/regional place for brunch....

Charleston Place Hotel has a beautiful and delicious brunch every Sunday for around $25 per person.

Yes, Charleston Place is great. Also see if Hominy Grill has a brunch. I am not sure about that.

Also, try the Sea Biscuit Cafe on Isle of Palms. They are very busy but it is worth the wait.

We won%26#39;t have access to a car so would like to stayWill be staying in Historic District/Downtown

Which is the Best Place for Children?

Anyone with advise,,,bring it on...Trying to decide on a place to stay, w/kitchen, pools and lazy river for the end of August. There are 4 adults and 2 children ages 2 and 6. I would like to have ocean view, with alot of water things for the kids..also a nice beach. Hurry, if you can, as I know this should of been booked way before. This is like a last minute get away...Thanks

Which is the Best Place for Children?

Kingston Plantation is nice for families. There is an Embassy Suites there (no kitchen, just a fridge in rooms, but complimentary breakfast served each day for hotel guests). Also, many condo options, but the best ones on site would be the Brighton and Margate towers. KP has a lazy river, kids splash pool area and many other pools, kids activites. www.kingstonplantation.com

Which is the Best Place for Children?

Never stayed at Kingston but I heard it was nice.

    We have stayed at:

-Compass Cove (www.compasscove.com) The Mariner building is the better building. The Pinnacle has been renovated but the elevators, I hear are still too slow.

-Hampton Inn Oceanfront (has free breakfast)

-Brakers Resort- We are staying in the Paradise Towers the nicer of the buildings they have. www.breakers.com

All of the above have kitchens, pools, lazy rivers, separate bedrooms (2,3,4 bedroom suites)

Never stayed at Kingston but I heard it was nice. We also have 2 children so we were debating on the hotel selections as well. Finally chose the Breakers Paradise Towers.

The Sea Mist is a wonderful hotel for children. Unfortunately, you will find some negative reviews on this website about that Hotel. Most of those come from people who have ';heard'; that it was a bad place. Well, we%26#39;ve stayed there for the past 5 years, and have loved every stay.

They have a wonderful waterpark and many things for children. It is well worth your time to check them out on-line.

Some great suggestions...and a few others to throw into the mix..

Sea Island (www.seaislandonthebeach.com) Brand new, OF, condo type accomodations, and on (IMO) one of the better beaches in the area...nice pool area

Monteray Bay --- located in the Avenues area, again great beach, decent pool area, good value for the $$ with a decent breakfast buffet and a dessert reception in the evening included in the price...rooms are a decent size with a nice kitchen.

Grande Shores....I love there kiddie pool area....makes me want to be a kid again, and still in that same beach area, apporx 79th Ave N and OB

All these properties are about the same distance to Broadway at the Beach or Barefoot Landing, within walking distance to a number of decent places to eat...and the bus stops right in front of the hotel if you dont feel like driving.

    :)

Well to give you an update. I took your advise and some feedback and booked the Hampton Inn Oceanfront. The Sea Island sounded really nice knowing it is new.
