weather/activity questions

we%26#39;re planning a trip to charleston in the beginning of august, we will have two small boys (6 and 4) with us. i%26#39;m was hoping to get some input on the following questions:

1. what will the weather be like in early august? (mainly i need to know if it will still be warm enough to go to the beach!)

2. are there any beach areas that would be good places for my guys to find ';treasures';; i.e. shells, sand dollars, etc?

3. what other activities are around that younger kids might be interested in?

thanks!

weather/activity questions

The weather will be extremely hot and sultry. Even the breezes off the water will probably be warm. The ocean water will be warm. The sun will be very strong, so please be extremely careful in using sunscreen.

How many shells are on the beach sort of depends on what%26#39;s been going on out to sea. If there has been a storm in the ocean, it may churn things up and throw more shells on shore.

Otherwise, the best time to look for shells is at low tide, especially early in the morning. Beachwalker Park, on Kiawah, is a very good beach for young children and has nice restroom facilities and a snack bar. We find a fair number of fossil sand dollars, as well as other shells.

weather/activity questions

1. As the first poster said, yes, it will be very hot. Probably 90%26#39;s in early August. You can generally swim comfortably in the ocean here until sometime in October. Keep an eye on the weather channel for tropical storm/hurricane forcasts before you come. That is typically when it begins to heat up.

2. Many. Beachwalker park is my favorite as well, but it kind of depends on where you are staying. It is on Kiawah Island and can be a pretty good drive depending on your location. Isle of Palms would be my next choice, but more people go there so not as many shells to collect unless you go really early.

3. SC Aquarium. Boys will love it. There is an interactive section where they can actually touch some sea creatures with assistance. Across the streee in the park they are constructing a tall ship by hand like it was done years ago. Very interesting.

Fort Sumter might be fun for them. The fort is okay, but a short tour. The boat ride out is where younger kids will usually have the most fun. Many times dolphins will tag along and jump across the bow.

Much of what to do depends on where you are staying. I would suggest Cypress Gardens since you can take a boat tour through the swamp (boys will like), but it is between Moncks Corner and Goose Creek, so may be a drive for you.

Several waterparks of course.

New Hotel Dunes Village Myrtle Beach

This hotel was scheduled to open in May and then in July and now they have said it will be open in August. I am a little worried about making a reservation because no one there can tell me about any progress they are making.

Has anyone seen or heard anything about this new resort? It is on 5300 N. Ocean Blvd.

New Hotel Dunes Village Myrtle Beach

Road by it last week and not sure if it was open. Other good options very close by are Forest Dunes, Southwind, and Sea Island.

New Hotel Dunes Village Myrtle Beach

Can you tell me anything about Sea Island Resort? I am going in August with my family. Is it kid friendly?

Sea Island looks to be very kid friendly...nice pool area, great beach, and just up the beach from the Dunes Village...I%26#39;m thinking that that project isnt planned on finishing until summer or 2007, they have alot to do there, but looks great in the pics. You may have gotten the opening date for the Sea Island mixed up in there as they arent that far from each other and under contruction at the same time.

:)

Hi,

Maybe I should clarify:

I wanted to make a reservation at Dunes Village but when I spoke to someone on the phone they said they couldn%26#39;t guarantee that they would be open in time for August. So then someone suggested that Sea Island was also nice and I should try to make a reservation there.

I called Sea Island and made a reservation, but there are no pictures of anything on their website. I was a little worried that they might not be kid friendly. The reservationist told me they were finished with construction and the pools and water slides and outside was finished. Is there more construction going on there?

We are taking my mother-in-law with us also and she jsut lost her husband and I want this trip to be as nice as possible for her so that is why I am asking a lot of questions. Can you help?

Ok...yep, the construction is complete on the Sea Island, and they have been open for almost 2 weeks now. I had taken some pics right before they opened, that if you want, I can email them to you. Nothing of the inside, but I did do a walk thru the lobby and restaurant, and it is really nice. The hotel staff were more than accomodating (as they were before they renovated the property). I really think that you will enjoy your stay here, and the beach, IMO, is one of the best in the area. And by August I would think that all the landscaping will have time to mature, and the place will be really plush and green!

For a great beach experience, when you get there, check with the lifeguard out front of the hotel to secure beach chairs and a nice beach umbrella....its a nice touch, and for the time you spend on the beach, it really makes things comfortable....and not alot of $$

If you need anything else, just let me know!

:)

Thank you so much for the information on Sea Island I really appreciate it. If you have pictures I would love to see them.

I do have some pics (I should get by there and shoot some more now that they have opened!) that were taken at the beginning of May, about 2 weeks before they opened, I%26#39;d be more than happy to email them to you....seems the link I have posted does not load for everyone.

Senior Week Hotels

I am going down to senior week June 16-19th. I am trying to get reservations at the Viking Motel because of how they will accept reservations. The reservation will be in my boyfriends name who is 19 and I will be staying down there and I%26#39;m 17. I was just wondering if there are any other places we can stay that allow 18 and over to have the reservation in their name and people under 18 to stay in the room with parental consent.

I just wanted to know of places that allow it because from what I%26#39;ve heard the Viking Motel is probably not the cleanest. I%26#39;m trying to find something cheaper because we are only staying for the weekend.

Post places you have stayed and places anyone you know has stayed at.

Time is getting tight!

Senior Week Hotels

I just spoke with someone whos kids went for spring break and stayed at mid town motor inn and they were very happy there. 18 year olds were welcome .wwwmidtownmotorinn.com 843-448-6942

Senior Week Hotels

Thanks I just reserved a room there.... Only a $100 down and $85 a night, not bad!

The girl that works with me told me the Pavillion is closed down and I looked at the website and it says the Farewell Season. Is it open for this last year and then it%26#39;s gonna be gone?

That%26#39;s correct....the Pavilion will close after this season. The company that owns it, Burroughs and Chapin, have yet to decide on what their plans are for the property.

:)

Hopefully it will be something good... But we are def. gonna take advantage of the Pavillion while its there. Its odd that everytime my family has been to the beach that we have never been to the Pavillion!

Too be honest, I%26#39;ll hate to see it go, but I think that it has run its time...I can count on my hands the number of times I%26#39;ve been, and I%26#39;ve lived here for a number of years. Would be nice if, with whatever they decide, a piece of the history of the park would be left, say maybe a roller coaster or the carosel...just something.

  • Restaurants near Sea Island

Are there any restaurants (fast food or dining room) within walking distance of the new Sea Island (within a mile or so)?

Anyone have any news or info about Sea Island since they%26#39;ve opened?

    Restaurants near Sea Island

Martins within Long Bay Resort and River City are walkable. Close by but probably 2 or 3 miles are Carolina Roadhouse,Villa Mare,Cheeseburger in Paradise,Atlanta Bread Co. and Bonefish Grille.

    Restaurants near Sea Island

What type of restaurant is River City, and what%26#39;s the price range? Is it a good place to eat? We%26#39;ll be at Sea Island starting Friday night and were looking for places to possibly walk to instead of drive because of the possibility of bike traffic over the weekend (and I%26#39;m assuming safety is not an issue). Thanks for the info.

River City is a burger place, but argueably one of the best there is. They serve salted in-the-shell peanuts and ice cold beer. If memory serves me right, there is probably 20-25 variations of a burger available. Casual and comfortable. Burger platters are about $5-$6. Highly recommended.

PS%26gt; Would love to hear a review on Sea Island after your visit. We%26#39;ve got reservations for August. Thanks.

River City Cafe sounds great and only about a mile away, which will be a nice walk for us. Glad to hear it%26#39;s a good place to eat and not expensive. Thanks for the info.

I%26#39;ll be posting a review of Sea Island when we get back, probably sometime during the first week of June.

    Try trip advisor reviews at

    tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g54359-d97477-R鈥?/a>

To get to Villa Mare go North on Ocean Blvd. till you get to 79th st. This left turn will take you out to a traffic light and you can very easily get accross 17 . Make a left past the Bank on the corner and Villa Mare is right there.

Also in the same strip mall is Atlanta Bread Co. which serves up a great loaf of soup for lunch. This consists of a small loaf of sourdough bread with the top cut off and the soup put inside.

If you want a quick rundown of whats in the area, here goes:

Go to the right out the front of the hotel to Highland Ave. This will take you to Kings Hwy. To your left before you cross Kings Hwy is KFC, Hardee%26#39;s and Grecian Delight (great little lunch and dinner spot, not expensive at all!). Across the Kings Hwy is the Food Lion (grocery -- good rotiesserie chicken), Kirk%26#39;s Ice Cream (YUM!), Jimmigans (Pub style food), The Bamboo Cafe (Chinese), Pizza Shak. Behind Jimmagans is a really good Italian place, Luigi%26#39;s...they just relocated to this building.

If you walk up Kings Hwy about about 3 blocks there is a tex-mex place called Garcia%26#39;s, and Fosters (pub), another block is Carrabas, and Flamingo Grill and Sunrise Pancake, one more block is Cheeseburger in Paradise, San Franscisco Oven, Marble Slab Ice Cream and BoneFish Grille, one more block is TGI Fridays, The City Bar, Liberty Tap Room and Grille, Pizza Hut, Palms Bistro, Sams Corner, Collectors Cafe, Villa Mare (YUM!), China Dragon (GREAT Chinese food!), Atlanta Bread Company.

    Happy Eating!

    :)

I forgot to add my FAVORITE Meixcan place in MB! Just across the street from the Flamingo Grille...called Fiesta Mexicana, great lunch buffet and dinner!

    :)

Thanks to everyone who contributes to this site. It really helps to have personal input from those of you who are so familiar with the area. We%26#39;ll be on our way tomorrow and look forward to enjoying our time in Myrtle Beach! Thanks again so much.

Is Savannah worth losing a day in Charleston for?

    Hello Everyone,

I have one more question for you all, please.

We are only staying in Charleston for 4 days in early June. On one of those days, we were thinking of driving to Savannah since I%26#39;ve heard it was so close to Charleston.

My question is - is it worth missing one day of Charleston for Savannah - or is Savannah not as nice as Charleston in terms of scenery/things to do?

    Thanks, all.

Is Savannah worth losing a day in Charleston for?

Personally, if you only have 4 days...I would stay in Charleston. Savannah is nice but there is so much to do and to see here. It is at least a 2.5 hour drive there - so 5 hours minimum on the road plus the time you would have for seeing things there.

If you were going to be here for an extended stay, yes it would be worth it. Just come back when you have more time.

Is Savannah worth losing a day in Charleston for?

I would say stay in Charleston---there really isn%26#39;t that much difference between the two---and it%26#39;s over a 2 hr. drive to get there--mabe if you have more time and would like to drive to Savannah then by all means go, otherwise stay put and enjoy your stay in beautiful Charleston. Have a good time!!!

Wow! I am sure that this would be a pretty heated debate between the two cities. Of course we all are going to rally for you to stay in Charleston.

Seriously, I think that Charleston is a more beautiful city and we have plenty of sights and tours to keep you busy while you are here. If you do decide to take the trip to Savannah it is about 2 hours away and as the previous poster mentioned that would mean alot of time in the car! So with that said Charleston should get all of the attention this trip! :-))

I agree with the previous posts. It%26#39;s a pretty town, but Charleston has A LOT more to offer - sites to see, restaurants, etc.

Savannah is nice but you need a local to really enjoy it. If you dont know where to go you feel like you are being taken advantage of like the rest of the tourists or you are in the ghetto.

    Stay in chucktown.

Now I wont show any biased towards one place or another I have been to both places and returned 4 times now , will be returning this june/july .

Personally I LOVE BOTH PLACES , and would recommend both places also , but with only 4 days I would say stay in Charleston see al the sights , visit all the place . This will give you a great feeling and wanting to return on another visit . Your next trip stay in Savannah that way you get to enjoy the hospitalitie of both places .

Saying that if two hours drive away isnt much that much for you well just drive on the highway 17 right into Savannah .

I found no problem as a tourist to both Charleston or Savannah of being in a tourist trap and I didnt walk into a getto either . I would remind the last poster come to London England , you will then know what a tourist trap really is and also a getto .

Being from Savannah, I would naturally say....';Savannah is worth a lot more than just a day trip.'; I think it%26#39;s much more beautiful than Charleston. I can%26#39;t imagine just skipping through in only a few hours.

It%26#39;s the same thing with people staying in Savannah going to Charleston just for a day. You can%26#39;t do justice to both places. That time spent traveling could be better spent seeing what%26#39;s there.

And personally, if given the magical choice of going to Savannah or seeing Magnolia Plantation or Middleton Place at Charleston, I would pick Magnolia and Middleton and hope that one day I could see Savannah.

Have you thought about going to Beaufort? It would be a shorter day trip if you run out of things to do in Charleston.

    What hotel

going to be in MB for the 4th of july with female friends wanted to know which hotel we can stay in close to all the attrations

    What hotel

If you want to be close to the Boulevard and the Pavilion I%26#39;d look at either the Dayton House or The Breakers Resort...both within walking distance but far enough away, and yet close enough to restuarants, and Broadway at the Beach. If you didnt want to stay OF I%26#39;d look at the Hampton at Broadway at the Beach...right in the middle of all the things to do there.

    :)

    Sea Island on SCC

I was watching the South Carolina Channel last night and there was a thing about Momand Pop hotels and the odl SeaIsland was on there. For it to be a older hotel they took great care of it. I also liked the way they had the den thing with the puzzles, books, games, etc for familys on rainy days.

One thing I anit all that crazy about is that they said they was going to try to use most of the furniture in the new hotel. I don%26#39;t think older furniture would fit in that good or less it was recently new.

I just thought this was interesting.

    Sea Island on SCC

    CBR...

a number of the older furniture pieces look great in the new place...most of the pieces are in the lobby or restaurant.

Things to do and see in June - solo

My spouse will be going to Charleston for a week for work.

I will be going down but I would like to know what are the ';must'; things to do and see to occupy myself during the day while he is working. Also,. would like some ideas of things to do in the evening with my spouse...great restaurants, etc.

    Thanks !

Things to do and see in June - solo

You will have a wonderful time. Charleston is a very manageable, safe, fun city. It is easy to walk everywhere in the historic district - museums, gardens, Battery, and the antique shops on King St., etc. You can get full and half tours from the Visitors Center to see the plantations.

Your hotel concierge and the Visitor%26#39;s Center will be your best resources in deciding how you owuld like to spend your time. i suggest you go to the Visitor%26#39;s Center on your first day.

Things to do and see in June - solo

You could start out with a tour of the city. If you%26#39;re solo, a walking tour would be perfect! Try Tommy Dew%26#39;s Walking tour (On the Market Tours) or the Original Charleston Walks company. I f you won%26#39;t have a car, you could use the trolly for transportation everywhere like the visitor%26#39;s center, homes, museums, or parks/gardens. The house tours in the historic district are another idea. There are 5 homes ($8-10 ea.), but for 39.95 (at the visitor%26#39;s center, you can get a 2-day heritage pass that gives you access to all 5 homes, both the Charleston Museum and Gibbs Museum of art, AND Middleton Place and Drayton Hall Plantations (which you would have to drive to). You do have to use the pass in two days, but if you see everything downtown, you have definitely paid for the pass! Don%26#39;t forget to stroll down Market Street King Street for shopping.

    *ENJOY

I won%26#39;t be renting a car so please more suggestions for solo activities. I would love to visit the historic homes...and plantations so those would be on my list. can anyone recommend great lunch places ? I will be visiting during the week.

Do you know where you will be staying? A lot of what you will be able to see by walking will depend on that.

    Hampton Inn Historic District

If you are there before June 11 you will be able to attend Spoleto Festival events. The festival started yesterday and has its finale on June 11.

As far as restaurants go, you will be in easy walking distance of a number of great places. My wife and I like the following ones.

    1. 39 rue de Jean (lunch or dinner)

    2. S.N.O.B. (Slightly North of Broad) Sophistical southern cuisine

    3. Magnolia%26#39;s

    4. Blossom

    5. 82 Queen (a classic Charleston place)

    6. Circa 1886 (dinner only; on the very upscale side)

    7. Penisula Grill in the Planter%26#39;s Inn

    8. The Charleston Grill in the Charleston Place Hotel

    9. Sermet%26#39;s Corner (Good place for lunch; a place we visit repeatedly)

    10. Anson (dinner only, I think)

    11. Fulton Five (Small Italian restaurant)

    12. Garibaldi%26#39;s (great seafood)

    13. Hyman%26#39;s ( downhome seafood)

By the way, my wife and I are leaving for Charleston in the morning for a 3-day stay during Spoleto. If I see anything new, I will pass along.

    Enjoy.

  • First trip to MB

We%26#39;re traveling to MB with our three kids who are 15, 13 and 12. We%26#39;re wondering where to stay. We will be there the end of June for one week. I%26#39;d like to stay on the beach... A kitchenette would be a plus and possibly a suite as well...Please advise...

We will be drving from St. Louis which is a 14 hour drive. Where would the half-way point be?

    First trip to MB

What Routes are you taking? Just glancing at map I%26#39;d say find your way to I24 and across I40 into NC.That would put Knoxville TN and Ashville NC around your midway point.

Being your first time to Grand Strand I%26#39;d recommend North Myrtle Beach or the north end of Myrtle Beach around Kings Road. Just seems to me you%26#39;d be overwhelmed with the traffic and crowds of downtown MB.

From NMB you%26#39;d still have easy access to attractions. Would be able to work your way south a little each night. Towards the end of the week you%26#39;d be comfortable finding your way around. Give you more time to relax and enjoy the beach vs worrying about finding the next nights attraction or restuarant.

See some examples of accomodations here.

    northmyrtlebeachtravel.com/book/query.html

    First trip to MB

A good place to stay that would ekkp the kids occupied would be Coral Beach Resort.

I woulkd also say stay to the north. Its seems nicer newer and less crowed. The roads around down town become overwhelmed by the traffic.

Check out VRBO.com for great condos in all areas.

For a beachfront condo I would recomind Sea watch

For a larger condo on the intercoastal waterway check out Barefoot Resort North Tower.

They also have tons of golf villas but the closest water is the pool...hahaha

Grande Shores Ocean Resort will live up to anyone%26#39;s standards. I have two teens and we have stayed there twice. Great pools lazy river, nice beach, clean and well maintained. The one bedroom condos are huge.

I guess I would have to put in my vote for the north end of Myrtle Beach (agree with the above post on Grande Shores)...the beach in this area, IMO, is one of the best in the area, you are about the same distance from Broadway at the Beach (www.broadwayatthebeach.com) or Barefoot Landing (www.bflanding.com) for some entertainment, shopping and dining options. You are close enough to the MB downtown area (Pavillon Amusement Park) but far enough to not have to worry about the traffic.

There are a number of places in this area with direct beach access that I think would fit your needs. You might want to check out Grande Shores, Monteray Bay Suites (I like the fact that they offer a really nice breakfast buffet and an evening dessert reception with the room rate!), Ocean Reef, The Sea Island (brand new and beautiful!), South Wind Villas or Ocean Forest...some of the condos can be found on www.vrbo.com.

When we drove down from central Illinois, we usually made our halfway right around Asheville, NC...thats a really neat area. We%26#39;d stay not too far off the Blue Ridge Parkway.

    :)

We%26#39;re returning to MB for the 3rd time this year with 3 kids - 18, 16, 11 years. We have always stayed at Ocean Creek in the Lodge Villas. 2 bedroom, 2 bath villas are affordably priced. Beach is a short walk on nicely shaded resort property and offer a tram if you are really tired from a day at the beach. Several pools if you are tired of salt water, game room, beach bar for snacks and drinks. Barefoot Landing is right across the street and offers a nice place to stroll at night - something for everyone and lots of FUN restaurants to keep the kids happy. The kids have always met other kids and are looking forward to this summer%26#39;s vacation! (Must be good...even our 18 year old is excited!) Beach is nice, lifeguards and mostly residential on one side - you can walk quite far before you see other hotels and the beach gets crowded.

As far as driving, we come from Wisconsin and have found that Knoxville is a nice stopping point. Gets the first big day of driving out of the way and there are lots of hotel choices available.

Hope this helps...the drive is long, but well worth it!

Well, we decided on the Ocean Creek. I hope it%26#39;s nice.. I hear the location is good but that some of the rooms aren%26#39;t as good as others... Can%26#39;t wait to go...June 21 :)

Check out Avista Resort and the reviews of it on this site. We just spent a week there. It%26#39;s new and it%26#39;s clean and rooms have full kitchens with dishwashers. If your kids like sports, nearby is the Overtime Sports Bar.

  • Beach Access fro Brighton Tower

We booked a 7 night stay in Brighton Tower ... Kingston Plantation. I am disabled and walk with crutches. Can you please provide info on the access to the beach ... how far, stairs, quality of the beach, etc. The tower is beachfront, but sometimes that still means a far walk ...

    Thank you in advance

    Beach Access fro Brighton Tower

The Brighton is ocean front. Very nice place, always stay in the Brighton when there. Use the elevators. Depending on what floor you are on, might not want to use stairs. There is a short pathway to the beach from the tower. Paved pathway that is. Not bad at all even for you on crutches. The beach is very nice, and the pool area is too! Live entertainment most days in summer. Have fun, I think you%26#39;ll be pleased with your choice!

Michigan to Myrtle beach for a day

We are a family of 5 from Michigan who visit Emerald Isle North Carolina every other year for a family reunion of 120 members. We have always driven and we found great airfare to Myrtle Beach from Detroit so we will only be in Myrtle beach for 24 hours before we drive to Emerald Isle. Anyone have any suggestions for a nice beach hotel or condo for one night. We have three teenagers who love the beach. Also curious to figure out the best way to go down the coast to Emerald Isle as we would love to check out a few towns that we might be interested in retiring to. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Michigan to Myrtle beach for a day

We enjoyed our stay at the Caravelle. The one bedroom ocean front rooms are pleasant. There is a balconey, murphy bed, and kitchenette. Compass Cove has a variety of rooms, too.

Michigan to Myrtle beach for a day

Recommend a stop at Sunset Beach NC.

Accomodations: Ocean Creek in northern end of Myrtle Beach

Great Location - beach - restaurants etc. You can visit their

    web site for more info

What date are you planning on being there? Few weeks ago somebody was looking for a one night accomodation to see concert at HOB.

One night stay was almost imposible to find. Think they finally found something out on Rt 17.

We will be arriving on friday July 28th. Thanks for the replies.

Emerald Isle is a LONG way from Myrtle Beach. Have you checked flights into Raleigh? I think Charlotte is even closer than Myrtle Beach.

We wanted to see myrtle beach and drive up the coast. There is also a direct flight into myrtle beach from detroit at a great price.

How much , and what airline. thanks.

I would suggest a suite at the Hampton Inn Oceanfront. www.hamptoninnoceanfront.com Beautiful hotel!

I know the airfare is a great part of your consideration and certainly valid, but you%26#39;ll be driving up Highway 17 and there really isn%26#39;t that much to see from MB to EI. You can pull off and see different beaches but I%26#39;m not sure you%26#39;ll see much variation. In some places I even think it%26#39;s an unattractive drive. But, enjoy your trip - you%26#39;ll like the beaches.

If you are only staying for one night, I would try priceline and see what you can get a 3 star (I doubt if you%26#39;ll see a 4 star) for. Most local hotels have a 2 or 3 day minimum rental on the weekends. As for visiting Emerald Isle, you pretty much have to take US 17 north to Jacksonville and then NC 24 to Swansboro and follow signs to Emerald Isle (NC 58 I believe). Most of it is divided 4-lane highway, although you%26#39;ll have to drive straight through Wilmington. Any of the Brunswick beaches Sunset beach, Ocean Isle Beach and Holden Beach are nice and laid back to consider retiring. Southport is an up-and-coming seaport sort of town- great to retire, but no beach. Wilmington is a city (actually NC%26#39;s 6th largest now I believe) with plenty of stores, shopping, etc, and has Wrightsville, Carolina and Kure Beaches. Beware of real restate prices if you want near the beach. Topsail is the lowest priced beach real estate around, but no dune line so every hurricane tends to wipe out the first and second lines of houses- especially North Topsail. Jacksonville is military and not really a retirement town. Swansboro is still affordable and near Emerald Isle. Once you%26#39;re in Emerald Isle, I%26#39;d take a couple hours and check out Morehead City and Beaufort (Thats BOW-ferd, not byooford). You%26#39;ll probably end up eating there at somepoint anyway. New Bern is an exceptionally nice historic town on the water- original capital of NC. Oriental is another town, although smaller- almost exclusively a fishing and sailing town.

I%26#39;d look into flying inand out of Raleigh simply because RDU should have much cheaper rates than going directly to Myrtle. It%26#39;s 2.5 hours from Emerald Isle/Atlantic Beach.

Also, you will probably want to take the kids to Atlantic Beach because there is MUCH more to do at night than Emerald Isle (midway, etc).

    Best Cheap Eats?

We%26#39;re leaving for Myrtle for a week on Memorial Day, and I%26#39;d like to save some money in the food department. Any suggestions for good cheap restaurants? Any kind of restaurant would be great! We%26#39;ll eat anything. Thanks so much! :-)

    Best Cheap Eats?

-Pig %26amp; Chicken in Surfside has GREAT BBQ pork %26amp; chicken at very reasonable prices

-K%26amp;W Cafeteria (good food %26amp; VERY cheap)

    -Hamburger Joes

-Spring House Family Restaurant (they have a VERY cheap lunch special)

    -Ms Fish (great seafood)

    -Ryan%26#39;s

-Seafood Hut (in Calabash, NC, about 45 min from MB) but fabulous food at very cheap prices

Check the coupon books all around town for dining coupons and the local newspaper (The Sun News) for coupons in their as well. A lot of the restaurants do great early bird specials where you can save quite a bit of money.

Enjoy %26amp; have a great trip!

Pig and Chicken is a great low priced one!

Pig and Chicken is a great low priced one!

Got to add 3 Little Pigs just at 62nd Ave and the bypass, and Fiesta Mexiacana at 70th Ave N and Kings....and one last one --- China Dragon (wonderful Chinese Food!) in the Northwoods Plaza @ 76th Ave N and Kings.

    Enjoy!

    :)

now that I see Fiesta Mexicana mentioned, I have to add that when my wife %26amp; I ate there, the price was so low I honestly thought they had made a mistake and only charged us for one meal! When was the last time that happened to you?

Also, if you don%26#39;t mind a little pushing %26amp; shoving, you can join the ';3:45 Club'; at Ryan%26#39;s. Because the shift from lunch to dinner occurs at 4pm, seniors %26amp; regulars jam the place just before that time to get an early dinner at the lunch price....but be warned...this crowd is ';on a mission'; so don%26#39;t get between them %26amp; the food!

    heritage club

we are thinking of going to the heritage club next year can anyone tell me anything about the resort good/bad what is the best time of year to go any other comments

    thanks ukellie

    heritage club

The Heritage Club is a Marriott Timeshare located in Harbortown. If I remember correctly, this complex has two master bedrooms in each unit, each of which is equipped with a Jacuzzi in their bathroom. You are best off in the fall or spring though the second week of April will be crowded because of the Heritage PGA tournament.

  • i lost??

Someone local had given me directions,i printed them out and lost them..I am coming from greenville sc.I think i was told i can bypass florence...I have have a car load so any short cuts or anything can help.........I have read to stay off of 501????As yall know we will be at the dayton house..If i can get directions again i love love it..THX.....

    i lost??

501 anit that bad all the time. Just get on it as early as possible and don%26#39;t get on it on a Friday or Saturday going to there or a Sunday coming back. THe traffic want be that bad then.

    i lost??

I am leaving greenville by 8:00 am on thursday the 1st of june

It will probaly be a 3 to 4 hour drive so 501%26#39;s traffic should not be real bad around 12. our whole family goes in July down on a Saturday and we leave Rock Hill at 9 and are one 501 about 12 and the traffic is saly moves pretty steady then or less there is a accident thee or something.

    Hope this helps!

Out of Greenville Rt 26 to Rt 20 (towards Florence) then I would suggest I-20 to I-96 N for about 8 miles to the SC-327 exit (says Myrtle Beach exit on sign). from the start of 327 go until the 1st light and take left (Quinby bypass). Road ends into 526

in front of Dupont plant and you miss all the Florence traffic. This will put you on Rt 501.

This is where you have 2 options. You can take 501 all the way into the beach, or exit onto Rt 22 to Rt 31...I%26#39;d opt for the Rt 22 into Rt 31, but if Rt 501 doesnt seem busy, you can stay on that.

As for getting onto Ocean Blvd its pretty simple ....if Rt 501, you%26#39;ll pass the Rt 17 Bypass intersection to the 2nd stoplight (R. Grissom Pkwy) turn left, stay on this til 21st Ave N (2nd stoplight) turn right...stay on 21st Ave N...you will go thru 2 stoplight, and then a T intersection, this is Ocean Blvd, turn left, go 3 blocks and Dayton House will be on your right.

If Rt 31....exit onto R. Grissom Pkwy, stay on this til you reach 21st Ave N (5th stoplight) turn left onto 21st Ave N, go thru 2 more stoplights and at T intersection turn left, 3 blocks and there you are!

Have a good time! And a safe trip!

    :)

I WISH I only had to worry about 3-4 hours, LOL. Have a 12 hour drive from Louisville ahead of us in only 6 weeks!!

Did you mean 95 or is there a 96??

Opps...sorry I did mean I-95, not a ';96'; around here that I know of yet anyway...

    :)

thx i was wondering about getting on 96 lol..i did see someone post getting on 96..I was just wondering..As for taking 3 to 4 hours to get there.i dont think so lol..I am in easley sc close to greenville.I have to get on 85 to 365 to columbia, then get on 26 to 20 to florence,my hubby says it takes 3 hours just to get to florence..This is my first trip driving with out him,,He drives everywhere..I am so nervous that i will will get lost lol....

I also just thought of something what about marion???If your wondering why i dont get directions from him lol..Well he said he just knows how to get there, not the names of roads or exits lol..

I know from Columbia to MB is just at 3 hours, you can do in about 2 and 1/2 but thats pushing it. Florence to the beach is right at an hour....as for Marion, its this side of Florence. If you take the cut off I-95 over towards the Dupont plant, thats about where you will come out onto Rt 501.

Hey! I go every year at least twice, and the VIP is great! And well worth it. If you are going with kids, the Family Kingdom deal is worth it alone! You%26#39;ll get your money back with that in it%26#39;s self. Go on the VIP website and search, you will be able to find lots of deals with the card. And if you are going to be going out with adults only at any time, Broadway has some great night spots and one free cover charge would pay for the card. Anyway, hope this helps!

  • Activities for College Kids

I%26#39;ve posted questions about Kiawah Island a couple of times in previous months and really appreciate all the responses! We%26#39;re going to Kiawah July 1 - 8 this Summer and are bringing our 19-year-old and 16-year-old sons. It sounds like there are great activities for teens at Night Heron Park, but I wondered if these were mostly for junior high and high school students, or if college-age kids also like them. Are there any other activities that would appeal alot to kids over 18 and give them a chance to meet other kids their age?

The guys plan to go kayaking, and I wondered if anyone can recommend which kayaking acitivity people would recommend for teens, e.g., nature trips, etc. They%26#39;re great swimmers and have gone kayaking once; are lessons still advisable?

We%26#39;d like to go into Charleston for dinner on 1 or 2 nights. Any suggestions for good restaurants that appeal to families and aren%26#39;t too costly? Thanks!

    Activities for College Kids

You might want to call Tidal Trails (843) 768-5680 about the kayaking. This is local company - the owner/guide lives on Kiawah. Both the Kiawah Island Property Owners group and the Kiawah Island Club use this company for kayaking. This will give your guys a lot more options to explore with an experienced guide. They can also do ocean kayaking and some longer river paddles.

I don%26#39;t think your sons will need lessons except maybe with the ocean kayaking if they haven%26#39;t done that before. In any case, the guide will be offering pointers on technique. Once they are comfortable with the area and the activity, they can rest kayaks on their own.

Don%26#39;t forget golf and tennis lesssons and clinics. The facilities can set your sons up to play golf and tennis with other young people.

Check with the Kiawah Island Golf Resort to find out if there are special evening events for college age visitors during that week. There probably will be, since July 4th is a BIG week here. Also, be sure to reserve any activities you want well in advance, because there will be lots of other visitors signing up.

    Activities for College Kids

I forgot to mention ... The sun here in July is strong. Mid-day can be brutally hot and steamy if you%26#39;re in a kayak, and a life vest, out on the river and creeks. You might want to consider kayaking in the morning or late afternoon. Go swimming in the middle of the day.

Thanks for the info. I%26#39;ll call Tidal Trails about kayaking this coming week. I heard from someone that marsh kayaking is for people 18 yrs. old and over. So I%26#39;m tempted to make a reservation for that, but I wondered if the marshes have alligators. I don%26#39;t care if they%26#39;re friendly alligators---I really want to avoid that!

Thanks also for the reminder about the importance of sunscreen. We%26#39;re going to try that continuous spray Coppertone and see how it works.

Also, Night Heron Park has an activity each night for teens, including bonfires, a teen mixer, etc. Does anyone know about what age group tends to go there? My other son and his friend are 16 years old and wonder if they%26#39;ll be too old for that.

The Night Heron Park activities should be great for 16-year-olds. As with all teen activities, it depends on who else happens to show up on any given night.

It would be very unusual for an alligator to be in the marsh or the river. The alligators like still water and mud. The marshes are tidal, so the water level is constantly changing. Also, the marsh grass and oyster banks don%26#39;t provide the cozy muck that the allligators like. On the marsh and river you will see lots of dolphins, crabs, and an amazing varitety of birds.

You will see alligators in and around lakes, ponds, and interior lagoons. They also bask in the sun on the golf course. The alligators are fascinating, but you should never appproach them, and NEVER feed them. Also, do not sunbathe or picnic on the edge of a pond or lagoon. The alligators mind their own business, but there is no reason to tempt fate! If you want to observe and learn about Kiawah%26#39;s alligators, take the alligator walk offered by the Nature Center.

Finally, be sure to rent bicycles unless you are bringing your own. Kiawah has many miles of safe and scenic bike trails as well as firm, level beach. For our teenagers and their friends, biking around the island has always been the favoriate activity ... freedom and exercise for the kids, without anxiety for the parents.

    Have a wonderful time!

Beach Boys in Charleston on Memorial Day

For all the locals that don%26#39;t know and for all the visitors coming to town over the Memorial Day holiday, the Beach Boys will be at the Family Circle Magazine Stadium on Monday, May 29! What better way to celebrate a truly American holiday than by listening to the Beach Boys. Tickets range from $15.75 - $78.75. You can get tickets at www.etix.com.

This band brings back such great memories to all age groups. I was tell my mama the other day how I remember ';crusing'; the Battery in my little red sports car in high school listening to the Beach Boys and she said she remembered cruising the Battery in her red Mustang in high school listening to the Beach Boys...I guess the apple doesn%26#39;t fall from the tree, eh?

At any rate, it should be a great show!

    Beach Bars / Nightlife

I will be coming in with a group of guys for a 4 day retreat of golf, sun, food, and cold drinks.

We are staying in Kingston Plantation in a 2BR lodge. Looks great on-line, but we are looking for some of the ';insider'; scoop for TOP beach bars for during the day, good eats for early evening, and of course late night fun.

Come on guys, what do you have?

    Beach Bars / Nightlife

    Himer

We stayed a couple of times at the Kingston Plantation. It is great! Very nice place, gated community style.

Daytime, Ocean Annies is very close to you, ask someone for directions. It is outdoors, bands, pretty good place.

Night time, the 2001 is real close to you as is Barefoot landing with the House of Blues, (its not all blues).

    Beach Bars / Nightlife

Good suggestions, jamtime! I would also suggest Bummz Beach Bar...just a bit of a drive into MB, its right on Ocean Blvd about 20th Ave N....live music, nice OF deck, good cold drinks!

For a bit of a different time out (and really popular with the locals) is heading down to Murrells Inlet along the marshwalk...a number of restaurants to choose from --- this is our seafood capital here ---plus most of the restaurants have outdoor decks with live music...one place that can get pretty busy is my fav, the Hotfish Club (www.hotfishclub.com) the gazebo there is the place to be seen!

Heading north you have a great little dive in Little River along the waterfront called Crab Catchers....good early evening/happy hour place with a deck that sits ON the water!

Then of course there always Broadway at the Beach for the later night (I%26#39;m surprised that jamtime didnt offer his insight on that one! Ha! )

Have a great time...theres alot of great places here, most with live music!

    :)

Jamtime has given you solid advice on Ocean Annies (daytime) and 2001 (nights). You are very close to both of these locations. Ladies all over the place!! I must say jamtime is holding out on you by not mentioning Broadway at the Beach. It seems to me from his post that he is trying to keep the men away from Broadway and inviting the women.

The Broadway is a bit of a drive. It is worth it for the women but I would take a cab from the Kingston. You can%26#39;t go wrong 2001 or Broadway!! Have fun and save some ladies for jamtime.

    Ouch!

Hey Guys - I really appreciate your help.

We are really looking foward to going. I think we have a couple mornings of golf set up, and we definitely want to spend the rest of the time on the beach, and at the local beach establishments.

Everywhere I have read lists Broadway, so even though Jamtime was holding out, I found that one!

    Thanks again guys!!

Take a cab from the Kingston to Broadway. Great nightlife for group of guys! Grab a Myrtle Beach VIP card online and you can get into any of Broadways Clubs without cover with the card. Go to one club and the card pays for itself! Good Luck! Kingston is great! Live Band and Cocktails poolside! Will be there in 3 1/2 weeks!!! Yeah!!!!

Would definitely have to agree with Bummz! Great place!

we are also looking forward to immersing ourselves in beautiful charleston.

where do you suggest we stay?

    thank you

    place to stay

You may want to try the Belvidere. Here is their website. http://www.belvidereclub.com. It is actually in Mt. Pleasant, but has the ambience you want. It is not dowtown, but it has a view of the water and those porches you want. The only other hotel with views and balconies is probably HarborView Inn and I don%26#39;t know if they have a large enough room for 3 on the penthouse level where the balconies are overlooking the water. Other options included Kiawah Island%26#39;s Sanctuary, which is quite expensive if you water water views with a balcony. There are plenty of downtown hotels with balconies, but not really any with water views.

  • Fripp Island in July

We will be spending a week on Fripp island in July. What all is happening then. Any suggestions about shopping on or around the island? We also hope to have a day tripp off the island any Ideas?

    Fripp Island in July

Call the resort and ask them to send you a list of activities/events offered during the week you will be there. Also next door is Hunting Island State Park. They have great programs lead by their naturalists which I think are superior to Fripp%26#39;s and much less expensive. On your way to Fripp stop off and pick up a list of their weekly activities at the visitor%26#39;s center (Hunting Island is the last island before you reach Fripp). Shopping is just typical tourist stuff on the isalnd but a quick 20 - 30 minute trip will take you into Beaufort which is a little ';jewel box'; of a town with lots of shops. Look into a quided tour such as Spirit of Old Beaufort. Well worth it and written up in Southern Living. If you love fresh tomatoes and other produce there are several stands between Beaufort and Fripp plus Gay%26#39;s which is where everyone gets their shrimp.

    Enjoy the Sea Islands!

Proposal Sites in Charleston/ Fourth of July -Patriots Point

Wanting to know if the Fourth of July in Charleston is as big a deal as it is made out to be. The largest fireworks display on southeast. Wanting to also know about beautiful locations in charleston to propose to a girlfriend. Suggestions appreciated...never been to Charleston.

    Thanks

Proposal Sites in Charleston/ Fourth of July -Patriots Point

I think the 2 best fireworks displays are Patriots Point and Isle of Palms. From my dock I can see about 5 different displays (some are pretty far away tho) and these 2 are always the longest and prettiest. I live on the Isle of Palms and the last few years displays have been VERY good. You could sit out on the beach and watch/propose. Or go out on the pier and do the same. I%26#39;m not sure about the best spots at Patriots Point. I think it would be great to propose at the end of the fireworks display - it would be memorable and you would be reminded of it everytime you see fireworks. If you wanted you could probly work in something along the lines of ';since you put the fireworks in my life...etc.'; Or maybe that is too corney, haha.

If you plan to propose at a different time than the fireworks I would suggest Waterfront Park or the gazebo at the Battery. The gazebo would be a great spot. It will be very hot and humid around the 4th, so take care to choose a time when your biggest memory won%26#39;t be that you were soaked in sweat when you proposed. At the end of a nice meal in one of the good upscale restaurants would be nice and no sweat involved.

Hope this gives you some ideas, if you have more questions, just ask.

Proposal Sites in Charleston/ Fourth of July -Patriots Point

There are also many beautiful churches here that often open during the day to look inside, if this is of interest to you.

The inside of the Cathedral of John the Baptist is particulary pretty. Very ornate inside.

wow those are really good ideas that have given me some more vision thanks. Let me ask you perosnally...is this not a great place...Charleston that is.....for a proposal?!!

Believe it or not the only fireworks display I have been to was for the opening of the new bridge. So I can%26#39;t comment on the 4th fireworks. As far as proposal sites, well, the possibilities are endless. There are so many places that any and all of them could be ';the right'; place. You could do it at a romantic candlelit restaurant downtown or on a private carriage ride, you could walk to the top of the Ravenel Bridge overlooking the Cooper River (the traffic in the background might take away from it though), you could go to a Plantation and find a secluded spot in the gardens, there is the gazebo in the middle of battery park, you could take a evening stroll along the beach and watch the sunset, you could sit in one of the swings at Waterfont Park overlooking the harbor. It%26#39;s endless.

I am not familiar with the beaches...is folly beach the place where you would be able to see the fireworks well and enjoy a beach...is there a better place (beachwise) to go besides folly. Isn%26#39;t the pier at folly beach? I also seen the gazebo area at the battery....can you see the fireworks from there? That would be excellent if so. Thanks for you help.

There are usually fireworks at ';The Joe'; baseball stadium after the Riverdogs (our local farm team) game as well as the ones previously mentioned. It is near the Ashley River - Lockwood Dr. at Fishburn St. Who knows - they might even put up a sign for you!

You can see the fireworks from Patriots Point from Waterfront Park.

A friend of mine was proposed to in one of the carriage rides for two before going to a nice restaurant. If you have a car, Angel Oak is a nice spot, too. It is pretty far away from downtown.

I was at a football game one time when a mascot that nobody recognized came up the aisle waving at the crowd. He suddenly got down on one knee and proposed to a girl behind me. When she accepted and took the ring, he took off the funny head to get a kiss.

Some of the gardens around the Nathaniel Russell House and the Edmonston Alston House have some secuded spots, too. You don%26#39;t even have to pay for the tour to see the gardens.

    Best wishes to you.

Can you see the fourth of July fireworks really good from waterfront park??? What about the gazebo on the battery? Is there a fireworks view from there?

Are there usually lots of people at either of these sites on July 4th? What about the beaches? Which beaches will give you the best view of the fireworks?

Keep pouring on the info and suggestions thanks everyone.

I didn%26#39;t know that you wanted to propose during the actual fireworks display. This makes it a little more tricky. You could get a room at the Hilton Charleston Harbor Resort At Patriots Point. Tell them your plans to propose and that you need a room with a balcony that you can view the fireworks. You will have more privacy this way, most places to view the fireworks are going to be crowded. Make arrangements for champagne and chocolate covered strawberries to be delivered. It will cost a few bucks but she is worth it right?

No, you will not be able to see the fireworks from the gazebo at the battery, too many trees blocking it and it sits too far back.

Charleston would make a wonderful honeymoon trip too! Good luck.

well perhaps before or after the fireworks, but thanks for the idea.

Someone mentioned the Angel Oak on Johns Island. The Angel oak is about a 20 minute drive south of Charleston. It has been around for about 1500 years, so it is highly symbolic.

You could spend the first part of the day at Beachwalker Park, the public beach access on Kiawah Island. Be at the beach early, because of the holiday. Once you are on the beach, you can walk the entire 12 mile Kiawah beach to get away from crowds. Then, stop at the Angel Oak for the proposal on your way back to Charleston. Be at the Oak before 5 pm, because sometimes it closes then.

Go back to Charleston for a great early dinner (make sure you have reservations) and the fireworks.

    one day only in Charleston....

coming from myrtle beach , is it worth the trip ? how long ? what would you do if you have one day only in Charleston ? we love the beach ...

    one day only in Charleston....

Charleston in one day well you cant do it justice you can get a quick over view but thats it .

Being approx 2 hours away from MB you will need to arrive in Charleston early to enjoy the day .

I would recommend you take a mule carrage tour I think that company is called palmello carrages who use mules and not horses ,you will also do plenty of walking .

Once you have seen Charleston you will certainly want to return for a longer stay .

Another nice town only 28 miles from MB is Georgetown nice river frontage broadwalk s few nice resturants too , also has an historic district

    one day only in Charleston....

Charleston is defintiely worth a visit. If you can only spend one day, you should arrive early and you should think in advance about what you want to do. Although it is a long drive from Myrtle Beach, once you are in Charleston, it is easy and cheap to park near everything you will want to see.

In one day, you might just want to take a carriage ride; walk around the historic district, the waterfront park and the Battery; visit the market; stroll along King Street to see the antique shops; and have a nice lunch at one of the many wonderful restaurants. You will get a feeling for the city, and you will definitely want to return.

On the other hand, you might want to wait until you get to MB to decide on the trip to Charleston. Who knows ... you might have a cloudy day, or someone might get a sunburn. Then the trip to Charleston would be a nice break from the beach.

thanks so much , i%26#39;ll check on Georgetown,

that was funny about the sun burn ..

    Location...Best Place to Stay...geographically speaking...

As I am looking at various hotels for my visit to Charleston, I was wondering if someone could help me out by telling me what are the differences in the areas of downtown charleston, mt. pleasant, and north charleston....say that I were to stay at these places...in the areas of beach access or closeness, shopping, site seeing (attractions), parking, dining, what are the advantages disadvantages of these locations....any help is appreciated.

Also, any suggestions on accomodations for 6 people....wanting to pay for one room or house/condo, etc. to lodge 6 people.....wanting to be comfortable, but not wanting to book two hotel rooms....

    Location...Best Place to Stay...geographically speaking...

In terms of site seeing and dining, Charleston is the place to be, although if you have a car and arrive early (for parking) you should have no problem with any of the places you mention.

I will be very hard to find a hotel in Charleston that will accommocate 6 adults in one room. Even the all-suite hotels seems to max out at 4 people.

The most comfortable way to house 6 together would be to rent a cottage or condo at one of the beaches, and then drive into Charleston for the big day. Unfortunately, most of the beach resorts have minimum rental periods - often one week - at the high season. July 4th is the HIGHEST season.

What about getting two adjoining rooms so that you can go back and forth between the two?

    Location...Best Place to Stay...geographically speaking...

Check Isle of Palms and Folly Beach for house/condo rentals. A simple google search will bring up leading companies who handle rentals. I agree you will probably not find the lodging you seek downtown or even in N. Charleston. But, you could check a site like vrbo.com ( owners who rent out homes). Best wishes.

Check out the Comfort Suites at Isle of Palms Connector.

They have one room suites with 2 queen beds and a pull out sofa for 2 for $139.00 a night on the 4th. You even get free breakfast of eggs and sausage. Won%26#39;t find much better than that. Heck, that deal is good enough to make me want to book a room! I wouldn%26#39;t wait though, I%26#39;m sure they go fast.

The post about the Comfort Inn suites is a great idea. That is a good location, but note that you will have to drive to beach and dowtown Charleston, but techincally could walk to the grocery store and some restaurants and some shopping (Mt .Pleasant Towne Center). I don%26#39;t think that North Charleston is a place for a visitor to this great town to stay; there is a lot of travel involved in that location and is a typical american suburb with lots of chain stores and traffic. Mt. Pleasant is a sprawling surburb of supposedly mid-upper class folks, which is close to Sullivan%26#39;s Island and it%26#39;s beach and Isle of Palms and it%26#39;s beach. It%26#39;s a good location to visit. Still some car travel, but probably cheaper than staying dowtown. Dowtown Charleston you basically park you car and walk everywhere, it is easy to do. But, you will need a car to get to the beaches. I don%26#39;t know if there are anyhotels dowtown for 6 people to be close together. As suggested, the Comfort Inn suites is good, and also try renting a beach house on Isle of Palms or Sullivan%26#39;s Island. If you stay on the IOP or SI than you can walk to the beach and some shopping and restaurants. SI has only a small grocery/conv store and IOP actually has a small grocery store, but from both SI and IOP need a car to get dowtown.

i was woderig if anyone has stayed at sands beach club and could give me any info on it. most the reviews didn%26#39;t sound tok good . I am staying at the oceanview part . if anyone knows how the views are from there that would be great to thanks oh! one more thing does aone know whats around the hotel thanks any info would help i%26#39;ll let know about my trip when i get back thanks holly

We stayed at the Sands Beach Club on our second trip to MB. I reserved an oceanview room, but was given a complimentary upgrade to an oceanfront 2 bedroom. We found everyone to be helpful, and the condo was very nice and clean. Only complaint I had was the elevators were slow, and they always seemed to smell like a blend of sunscreen and fish.

The Beach Club is located north of the main MB area, which we found preferable. It is closer to Barefoot Landing than Broadway on the Beach, but not so close to North MB that you feel remote from the action.

We%26#39;ve stayed at the Kingston Plantation and the Beach Cove as well. We preferred Kingston Plantation over the other two, but the location of the Beach Club was preferable to that of the Beach Cove.

    leaving next saturday

was just wondering how did you get a free up grade. do you think the oceanview would have a good view of the ocean. when was you there thanks fir the info. my parents are goinh with us so i didn%26#39;t want them to be disappointed thanks alot

You usually get upgraded to a nicer room in a hotel when it%26#39;s your first time at that establishment, or your first time staying in that brand of hotels because sometimes they ask you if you have stayed with them before. It%26#39;s a gimmick to make you want to go back to that hotel. for example, We where in Quebec city once and we stayed at a different hotel than he one we did last time in the City. We said to the girl at the desk that we usually stay at the Hilton (just making conversation) and then she upgraded us to a suite on the top floor!

As for the oceanview ... well if it%26#39;s an ocean view room im sure you will have some sort of view of the ocean. But you have to be careful, there is a difference between ocean view, and ocean front. Ocean view could by a side view of the ocean, and an ocean front is completly facing the ocean. I would check with the hotel, as most vary on this.

I stayed there in the early 90%26#39;s and it was in need of updating then, carpet, room amenities, etc. Hopefully they%26#39;ve done is a few times since then. I had a blast there though; when I stayed it was full of 20 and 30 somethings, having a great time. Hopefully you and your family have a great time there too!

  • Charleston in Novemeber

We willbe driving back to FL from a wedding in early Novemeber and thought we might stop in Charleston for a day (and stay the night). What is the weather like in Novemeber? What sorts of things are there to do that time of year? Any charming, romantic places to stay anyone would reccomend? This will be our first trip to Charleston.

    Thanks.

    Wendy

    Charleston in Novemeber

The weather could be warm and nice or cool and rainy - hard to gauge. There are many charming and romantic places to stay. Do you want to stay in the historic district or on the beach? Want a hotel or bed and breakfast...or a condo? Price range?

To do? You will want to walk around the historic district - you can take a carriage tour ( good way to see a lot in a short amount of time). You%26#39;ll want to walk along the Battery. You can take a harbor dinner cruise. Tour one of the old homes. Eat! Shop! Visit the Aquarium/Imax. What types of things do you like to do? The Visitor%26#39;s Center downtown is a good place to begin. They can provide you with tons of info.

    weather!!!ew

I just read the forecast for the 1-5....Just my luck cloudy on the 1st..then rain 60 percent, rain 20 percent, rain 60 percent all the way til i go home on monday...wahhhhhhhhhhh.....

    weather!!!ew

60% chance of rain doesn%26#39;t mean much. It usually means sunny with a quick shower in the afternoon followed by sun and HOT! You will be fine.

    weather!!!ew

THem afternoon storms can be real strong at times so if they come then take shelter.

Don%26#39;t think a days goes by that ';chance of'; isn%26#39;t in the forecast down there. It%26#39;s like up here in the winter. They%26#39;d rather predict snow and be wrong than not predict it and get slammed.

No big deal. As was mentioned before, most of the storms are short. More often than not if it%26#39;s in the afternoon you%26#39;ll run inside, eat and be back on the beach in an hour or two. If it blows through at night you might see some pretty neat lighting strikes.

Worst downpour I remember was during an early 90%26#39;s trip. Hit around 11am. Something like 4'; of rain in two hours. All the low areas were flooded. Streets and intersections were 1-2 foot deep.

We were at south end of Windy Hill over looking the old Barefoot Landing Campground. I think the phrase ';unhappy camper'; was coined that day.

We headed to the mall along with every other vacationer. By 2pm the water had soaked in and we were on the beach.

In MB, especially in the summer, the weather is very ';iffy';! It can be raining on one side of the street and not the other! We locals always say if you don%26#39;t like the weather, wait 30 minutes and it will change so don%26#39;t let the weather reports discourage you. Enjoy your trip!

Like anybob says...if you dont like the weather, just wait 30 minutes! :)

Alot of the higher percentages are caused by the afternoon seabreeze that is created (something to do with thermal warming and all) this will sometimes create...not all the time...a breif, but sometimes intense afternoon shower...that, like Bob says, is over almost as soon as it starts.

And check the weather closer to your dates...its amazing how fast the weather report changes around here!

    Myrtle Waves V.S. Wild Water

Every year when we go to the beach the kids go to Wild Water waterpark located beside the flea market in Surfside. I found Myrtle Waves waterpark which by there website has about the same things. The price for Myrtle waves is $1.00 more after three aclock but on Tuesday Wednesday or Thursday you get to stay to 7 instead of 6. I was wondering which of these two waterparks do you and/or your family like best and why?

    Thanks

    Myrtle Waves V.S. Wild Water

We choose Wild Water as well, only because we were told it%26#39;s generally less crowded than Myrtle Waves. Spending less time waiting in line is of ultimate importance to us.

The only significant difference between the two parks, that I can see, is that Myrtle Waves has the Arooba Tooba. (I call it the human-flushing toilet.)

    Myrtle Waves V.S. Wild Water

I personally prefer Myrtle Waves for the attractions/slides but in the summer the lines there can get VERY long so Wild Water may be a better choice. Nothing at all negative about Wild Water, as that is a very fun waterpark as well.

Lakewood is a great campground. We stay there ever year with our whole family camping. They have just put in new bath houses with a induval bathroom itself with a toliet, shower, and sink and they have heat and air in them. They are real nice. They also have ab unch of things for kids to do such as pools. arcade, putt putt, paddle boating and a whole bunch more. If you have kids going with you it would be a great idea so they can ride. We have bikes when we go for kids an adults. It is really nice and I think that you will like it. We will be down July 8-13. I can%26#39;t wait.

Best July 4th condo in Myrtle Beach????????

My family is planning a July 4th vacation to Myrtle beach, what is the best condo to be in???????

Best July 4th condo in Myrtle Beach????????

For fireworks I would stay at Cherry Grove area near the pier where they are set off. This is the northern tip of Myrtle.

Best July 4th condo in Myrtle Beach????????

What are you looking for? I think the best condo units are in Crescent Shores and they have very good amenities too. Other very good choices are Ashworth, Avista, Bay Watch, Barefoot North Tower, Fairfield Ocean Boulevard, Fairfield Sea Watch and several others. try www.northmyrtlebeach.com or vrbo.com.

Since you mention ';family'; I guess it%26#39;s safe to say kids are in the group. If so the above suggestions are good. Many pools and lazy rivers.

If by chance kids aren%26#39;t in the picture you might consider a smaller condo building without as many ammenities. The larger resort type buildings will be packed during the Fourth Of July Week.

Barefoot Landing and Broadway at the Beach put on fireworks displays every week. Can only imagine what they put off for the Fourth.

    Atlanta to Charleston

Can someone please tell me the best route from Atlanta to Charleston?

    Thanks

    Atlanta to Charleston

Take I-20 east to I-26 (near Columbia, SC) then take I-26 south to Charleston.

    Atlanta to Charleston

Thanks for your resonse. is that a lot better than taking, I-20 to, say, 78 into Charleston?

You will go through a zillion little towns all complete with radar traps, stop signs and stop lights on 78. The interstate is much better to get here fast. If you want a long leisurely trip, take 78 to 61 (between Midway and Branchville) then take 61 into Charleston.

Be sure to stop at some of the produce stands and pick up some fresh peaches and tomatoes. Money can%26#39;t buy true love or a homegrown tomato!

    thanks again!

    Sea Mist Resort

It has been years since we did the family value package at the Sea Mist. I know it was getting old then and the Family Kingdom was showing its age. We are considering it again and wondered if anyone had been there recently. How was it? How is the water park they own down the street (not the one onsite)?

    Thanks.

    Sea Mist Resort

Sea Mist is definitely in need of some MAJOR renovations! It would definitely not be my first hotel choice. As of now the rooms do show their age...not very clean, moldy and you will find bugs! Sorry just being honest.

    Sea Mist Resort

Thanks so much, anybob. I was hoping they put miliions in renovations but do much appreciate your honest opinion.

You are very welcome! MAJOR renovations for the Sea Mist are in the plans for the future and will be really nice once that happens but until then...

Glad to read this. I only needed one persons opinion and out with Sea Mist. If you haven%26#39;t already made plans, don%26#39;t choose them.

We went to MB last summer in late August and we stayed at the Breakers Resort Hotel. It could use some upgrading but it was ok. The Paradise Towers is absolutely the best of the three breakers hotels.

When we go to Myrtle Beach, we try to drive by and/or stop in and take a look at the other hotels we were planning on going to. That way we make a list of do%26#39;s and don%26#39;ts. We saw the Sea Mist. I thought it was ok because of all of the water attractions and family things but it%26#39;s too big. I want everything to be on one side of the street. I don%26#39;t want to have to walk across a busy intersection with 2-3 kids and pool accessories to get to the pool. I saw rust growing on the building and it smelled inside a little. They should probably begin doing renovations to their rooms or people will stop going there. The location is probably the best thing about the resort now.

    Looking for a family photographer

I will be visiting Charleston (staying at Folly Beach) the week of July 4 and would like to have a family picture made on the beach of perhaps in some historic setting. Two questions: can anyone recommend a good but reasonably priced photographer and are there any particular places that make good settings for casual family portraits? Thanks!

    Looking for a family photographer

Try Heather Keller Photography. Her website is hkphoto.com. She did our wedding and engagement phots and they were great; and reasonably priced. She also did our friends%26#39; family portrait and was great. Anywhere along the beach is nice; dowtown well known landmarks are good too, so you will also have a piece of Charleston.

    Looking for a family photographer

Whoops, there is a typo in the above....her website is hkkphoto.com. Sorry.

Thanks so much. I will look her up. I%26#39;m open to other suggestions as well since she may be booked up.

  • Coming Fro UK

    Hi

I am coming to Charleston for 3 days I have 2 half days and 1 full day to see Charleston. (June 1 to June 4 th)

How is the weather ? Do I need to bring any pullovers, etc? Is cotton okay?

How is transport? I am staying at Comfort Inn. Which places can I see on walk from there?

    Thanks

    Coming Fro UK

Which Comfort Inn? There are several.

The weather is hot and humid! When packing think - LIGHT-COOL-LOOSE! Cotton is fine. Just bring light cotton. Bring along sunglasses, sunscreen and plan to drink plenty of water. Tuck in a small umbrella in case of an occasional rain shower, although we have not seen any lately. If you are planning to be on in a theater, bring something with a sleeve because the air conditioning can get cool.

There is much to see and do here as you can see from some of the other postings. It is Spoleto Festival so there are many performances in the day and the evening. Tickets are still available to many of the performances.

    Coming Fro UK

    Hi SCBlossom,

Thanks a lot for the kind reply.

I am staying in the Comfort Inn at 144 bee Street. Near the MUSC.

How is the hotel just read some bad reviews (esp the area being unsafe) as I intend to walk around do you think the area is okay?

Or shall I book the Courtyard by Marriotte at 35 Lockwood?

    Please advise

    drpardha

Well, if you are going to be walking, I don%26#39;t think I%26#39;d choose that particular hotel. Nothing personal against the hotel, I%26#39;m just concerned with the area. Now that%26#39;s just my opinion, and you may get a few ';what is he talking about?'; replies. The hotel on Lockwood is a bit safer, but both of them are a long walk towards the (sorry to use this word) ';touristy'; areas. Personally, I%26#39;d try a place closer into town, but then you%26#39;ll see the prices go way up.

Either way, bring your swimming costume for the pool, have an ice lollie, and relax. Enjoy your stay, if you haven%26#39;t already left!

If you are coming June 1, don%26#39;t cancel your reservation until you have another one. You are cutting the time pretty close.

It%26#39;s going to be hot and humid. You definitly do not need pullovers. Cotton is your best choice. A cotton blend will be OK. 100% synthetic can be miserable in the heat.

    Have fun!!

I agree with Floski and Aleen. You are coming during a peak time for hotel stays - Spoleto. Do not cancel until you have secured something else. You can always take a taxi or ride the bus to the downtown ';touristy'; area but it is a long walk from either hotel. Both hotels are pretty close to each other so one is not that much better than the other. That is not the best neighborhood to be walking around in at night. It is ok during the day but I would hesitate to walk around there at night. Both are on bus lines for day time transport but it would be better to plan to take a taxi at night. It should not be very expensive from any of the ';downtown'; hotels.

That Comfort Inn gets most of its business from people needing to be near the medical center. I do not know anything about the rooms so the postings may be a good indicator.

This may be too late but I%26#39;ll say anyway. Skip the Comfort Inn if at all possible that place is less than glamorous to say the least(and will soon be replaced if I heard correctly.) If you are staying in that area it is definitely not a place I would recommend walking from so look into taking taxis or the bus to the more active parts of town.

    Which area to visit?

My husband has never been to the Charleston area, and I would love for him to see how beautiful it is. My family vacationed in Kiawah when I was young, and I have also stayed in Edisto, but I would like something cheaper than Kiawah and not quite as far away from Charleston as Edisto. Anyone have any suggestions for somewhere to stay in the Charleston area that has us close to the beach but not spending over $150 a night?

    Which area to visit?

    Try Mt. Pleasant.

    Which area to visit?

My hubby and I stayed in a really nice oceanfront condo on Seabrook Island last summer. Seabrook is 2 minutes south of Kiawah. We found our condo on VRBO... 1BR/2BA, full kitchen, vaulted ceilings, walk-down to beach, immaculate. During August, it was about $135/night. Enjoy!

That%26#39;s all about time of the year. I would recommend Mt. Pleasant area. Perhaps you can find something on Seabrook, Isle of Palms or Sullivans Island for under 150 which would be great but not likely right now.

Looking for a condo or hotel with a large pool or something...

Hi, I am looking for something nice and clean and fun kid activites by the hotel or condo, with a feeling of being in the islands.

any help would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Looking for a condo or hotel with a large pool or something...

Coral beach Resort would be a good one. The have two big outdoor pools, 1 indoor, arcade, bowling alley, gift shop, resturants, jungle gym, and many things for adults such as pool side bar and karoke.

Looking for a condo or hotel with a large pool or something...

We have chosen Compass Cove. Have not stayed there yet, but hoping it will be great. CompassCove.com is the website and it has several water activities. When are you planning on going?

Check out Fairfield SeaWatch and Barefoot North Tower

Try the Sea Mist Ocean Resort. Haven%26#39;t been there in a few years, but have mini golf, small water park and passes to amusement park at night.

Embassy Suites at the Kingston Plantation has a great pool area for kids, but it is definitely one of the priciest hotels in MB. One of the nice things, though, about the entire resort, is that the condo areas have their own pools, and some of those after a day at the beach and at the main pool are very relaxing.

CeeAnne: I stayed at the Compass Cove about 3 years ago. The Pinnacle building which is the largest of the buildings was in desparate need of upgrading. The elevators were hot and muggy and smelled like urine (actually it was probably just water from all of the kids coming in there barefeet from the pool, there should be a rule against that. It is very dangerous to walk around a hotel without your shoes, but anyway). The rooms in the Pinnacle were a little small and the shower needed to be updated. The beds were hard and the linen needs to be thrown out and get some new ones. I loved the pools.

The lazy river was nice and the indoor/outdoor pools were wonderful. It is in the area where most young people like to play and be loud. But if you like that stuff you will be fine. The Mariner building is the newest (5-6 years or so). It sits on top of the Motel. Haven%26#39;t stayed in this building but since it%26#39;s new you shouldn%26#39;t have a problem with upgrades.

Also, I like the parking. It%26#39;s all on the front of the Pinnacle building. We could actually walk out of our room and look out over the rail/and see our car. Don%26#39;t know about the mariner building. DON%26#39;T STAY IN THE SCHOONER BUILDING. IT IS AN OLD MOTEL. PROBABLY IN NEED OF REPAIR AND UPGRADES. THEY MAY HAVE SINCE THE LAST TIME I STAYED YOU CAN ALWAYS ASK THEM WHEN IT WAS LAST RENNOVATED.

Mrs Maryland the Pinciaple buliding was just updated. They are actuly just finished up not to long ago.

  • day trips out of Myrtle Beach

We will be visiting Myrtle Beach for our first time in July. We have been looking for places to visit for a day trip out of Myrtle Beach. We where thinking of Charleston, but it looks like a long drive. Anyone know of any little towns or touristy place%26#39;s within an hours drive of Myrtle Beach for a day trip?

day trips out of Myrtle Beach

This depends on where you are staying in MB. If you are on the south end, Georgetown, is a short drive down 17. North end closer to NC line, Wilmington, NC. Both are nice little, historical towns. But really Charleston, SC is a must see.

day trips out of Myrtle Beach

Charleston is just a bit over an hour from the beach, but not a bad drive. And well worth the trip. Alot to do there (check out the forum on this site for Charleston)

Another option is Georgetown -- about 40 minutes south of MB, alot of history, great waterfront with some fantastic restaurants and shopping. Just north of Georgetown is Pawleys Island, a bit of history there, especially out on the ';island';, great place for shell collecting.

If you go north there is Calabash, quaint little fishing village, a few little shops --- and west of us is Conway, nice little downtown area, a great riverwalk...

You can ';google'; most of these places for additional info --- another place but not really a ';town'; is Brookgreen Gardens. This place is awesome!

    :)

I agree with MBC on Charleston or Georgetown. I especially love Charleston! Enjoy!

I live about an hour and a half from MYB. Not only is Charleston your best bet but you will have a beautiful drive down SC 17, also known as King%26#39;s Highway. They say Geo Washington took the King%26#39;s Highway down the east coast when he visited the new states. Also, your first attraction when entering Charleston will be Boone Hall Plantation, with a a real huge plantation house (really?), and where they filmed a portion of ';Gone with the Wind';. Don%26#39;t forget also to visit downtown Charleston along the battery where huge houses overlook the harbor. the old slave market houses a good museum upstairs, plenty of junk to buy downstairs. And you can do a tour of Fort Sumter where the War between the States began. I could go on and on.

You can stop by Georgetown and spend some time along the main street, and there is a plantation house to visit south of Georgetown at the river. If you are staying at a place where you can cook, then you should be sure to buy shrimp in Georgetown. When I wrote a retail dealer about shorting me a few pounds, he not only made good on it, but he also sent me a gift certificate for 5 more pounds.

Wilmington is another great little town north of MYB but that%26#39;s another long story!

Spend one day going to Brookgreen Gardens. It%26#39;s just south of MB on Hwy 17. In the same area is a state park (I think it%26#39;s Huntington ?) these two places could take an entire day. Brookgreen has an excellent little restaurant on the grounds.

Aileen is corrrect. I guess we sometimes take for granted what we see on a regular basis. Her city, Savannah, is beautiful too!

Is one day enough to look around Charleston? We were thinking of stopping at the Bonne Hall Plantation for the morning, then heading to Charleston for the rest of the day, is this too rushed? Please advise? Also, is there lots of parking available in the city of Charleston to park your car then walk around? Were exactly is this Market in Charleston that everyone talks about?

Sounds like a full day of it. Parking is tight in Chas, but you should be able to find a space if you look around. Just get on Bay Street and you won%26#39;t be able to miss the market. It%26#39;s full of SC items, pre-made soup and other food mixes, hand-made items, jellies, just all kinds of stuff. All types of shops line both sides of the market and there%26#39;s a great french restaurant on the southern street that parallells the market. You might end up wanting to spend a night and wander about the old town for a day, and make sure you take a carriage tour for a great historical perspective.

And if you do go to Charleston, be sure to hit one of my favorite places the rooftop of the Vendue Inn...I think it is located on Meeting Street...but this rooftop is awesome...great for a sunset cocktail and snack! The view is beyond words!
