Fall or Spring trip to Charleston/Kiawah Island. Which...

Hello. Coming to Charleston for the 1st time from California. Traveling with our 3 year old son. Will we be cold if we come in October? We want to visit the beaches on Morris Island, Seabrook and Kiawah. Is spring a better option for us? We want it to be warm without the humidity. Any info helpful!

The weather in October is usually very pleasant. Still warm with some cool mornings and evenings but not cold. It is always humid here but less humid in the cooler months - or at least it is not as noticable.

Perhaps you mean Folly Beach rather than Morris Island?

Spring is a beautiful time for the flowers and touring the gardens and plantations. Fall is nice and has less tourist than Spring or Summer. Watch weather reports for tropical storm systems in the Fall. Hurricane season runs through November.

A carriage ride is a must! Your son may enjoy the Children%26#39;s Museum, the Aquarium and touring the Yorktown. From mid-September until late April or early May, there is a Dress Parade every Friday afternoon that is free and open to the public at The Citadel. Little ones love seeing the cadets marching, complete with bagpipes and cannons! Check the website www.citadel.edu for times. The parade is cancelled if it is raining.

There is so much to do. The Visitor%26#39;s Center can send you a visitor%26#39;s packet to help in planning your trip.

Late spring (early May - mid-June) and fall (mid-October - early November) usually have very comfortable weather for sight seeing and beaching.

April can still be a bit cool and breezy at the beach. The ocean water is not yet warm. September might be glorious, but the rist of tropical storms and hurricanes is too high for my taste. (Hurricane Hugo hit Charleston on September 21, 1989.) Even though the risk of hurricanes begins June 1 and continues through November 30, the historical risk in this area seems greatest in the mid summer to early fall.

October is our favorite month on Kiawah. The ocean water is still warm. Daytime highs average in the mid-70%26#39;s. The nights are cooler. The sun in October is still very strong, so the air warms up quickly. Use suncreen! Even though humidity is always with us, it is definitely not as uncomfortable in October as it is in the height of summer.

Next to October, our favorite month is May.

I agree with kiawahvilla so much its not even funny! They really know what they%26#39;re talking about. Kiawah + October = My vote! ;)
